Why does she have to be retconned or dead? We've had the noble suicide, so that's over. And the more I think about it, the more I like the theory that the bit from the beginning episode is Rose returning knowing that history is back on track, with Donna about to start adventuring with the Doctor as should be.
We know that CT only signed up for one season, but with the next "season" being only a series of specials, there's plenty of room and time for them to bring her back even if she didn't have the time to do another proper series of 13. So they don't even have the pressure of writing her out in two episodes.
Because RTD has said he's tying up all the Companions' stories so Moffat can have a clean slate to work from - and since Donna has said she wants to travel with the Doctor forever, and we know CT's not coming back for another full season, dead or retconned is the only logical way I can see for Donna to stop travelling with him.
That still doesn't mean the end of this season. RTD's doing the specials too, and I don't really see them doing three one-off companions or a Doctor-on-his-own.
Fair enough. It wouldn't surprise me if he did. Though I'd rather he had the same person from Xmas 08 through to Xmas 09.
Of course, what I would really like to see in the specials is a "missing adventure* for each new Who companion - that would suit me fine (I'd even sit through 90 mins of Rose and Ten!) - but I doubt I'll be that lucky!
They seem to be taking that approach with the Boxing Day books - one Martha, one Donna, one Doctor alone. Who knows about the specials? Although I am assuming that Moffat will be bringing in a companion of his own as he takes over, whether Ten stays or goes.

And until Jossed, I am clinging to my belief that Catherine Tate will be available for at least one special.
