Whilst Donna went to shower and change, the Doctor took himself to the Med Bay; he wanted to make sure that there were no lingering traces of cyanide in his system.

As he ran the tests, he couldn't help thinking that Donna's shock tactic had proved to be very shocking; he'd had no expectations of her kissing him. He couldn't help thinking that Martha would probably have slapped him in the same situation: he could still feel an echo of the slap she'd dealt John Smith that time. Although she'd seemed less inclined to slap him when he'd seen her recently; she'd been a lot more confident and self-assured, and more at ease with him too.

He found his mind wandering back to when he'd kissed her on the Moon: her taste, her scent, the texture of her lips had all burned themselves into his senses. She'd been soft, sweet and gentle, and he'd been tempted to linger longer, but the urgency of the situation had chased him away.

Donna's kiss, in contrast, had been stronger, firmer, fiercer, even, in a way; but then she nearly always seemed strong and fierce on the outside, whereas Martha mostly held her strength and ferocity inside herself. Donna seemed almost afraid of showing her softer, gentler side except in private, whereas Martha had seemed almost afraid of showing her inner strength. It was an interesting contrast, and he couldn't help wishing Martha had wanted to spend more time travelling with him and Donna, because the two women made quite a formidable team. And both of them grounded and anchored him: they made him feel safe and cared for, and connected in a way that he hadn't felt for a while. He felt that Donna was the guardian of his conscience and Martha the guardian of his hearts, and he wondered if he'd ever dare tell either one of them how he felt.
