Changes: Claire has to adjust to her new body, as well as strike out on her own, as she wakes up in an unfamiliar place surrounded by people who keep mistaking her for the Queen. However, no matter what dangerous situations she gets into, she keeps her faith in Veigue. She begins to witness firsthand the discrimination facing Callegea's citizens, something she wasn't aware of as an isolated country girl. She's exposed to the best and worst of people, getting sheltered by a man whose father despises Gajuma, or almost being sold in a black market auction.

Eventually she's picked up by a man who gives her to his daughter as a servant. The girl, Susie, was one of the kidnapped women just like Claire herself, and her father thinks that having a servant that looks like the queen to order around will help her overcome her ordeal. However, Susie doesn't have the heart to do so, and doesn't share her father's prejudice against Gajuma--she was saved by Veigue and his friends, of which Eugene Gallardo, a Gajuma, was one of them. She tells Claire to escape while she can, and lets her go. Claire ends up wandering into the city slums, where the Gajuma of the city are forced to live as second-class citizens. Moved by their plight, she returns to Susie's father, the mayor, to plead on their behalf.

He orders her execution. It will be public, in an attempt to dishearten the Gajuma population even further. But Claire musters her courage enough to use her "last words" to try to appeal to the hearts of the watching crowd, saying that everyone, no matter what race they are, feels the same on the inside. Veigue sees the speech, mistaking her for the Queen at first, but when he hears her words about eating peach pie at home in her village, he realizes the woman facing down death is actually Claire. He manages to save her in the nick of time by using his ice Force to freeze the guillotine blade in place.

Reunited at last, Claire tells Veigue that she knew he'd be able to tell it was her, no matter what she looked like. Though the moment is heartwarming, those words return to haunt the pair. With the truth out, Agarte, in Claire's body, runs away in shame. Veigue wants to look for her in order to make her give Claire's body back, but there's a more pressing matter at hand. Veigue and his companions are looking for a way to rid the world of the negative emotions causing the racial conflicts across the kingdom, by making pacts with powerful creatures called "Sacred Beasts". Each Beast chooses a member of the party to undergo a trial and gain their power.

Claire travels with the group on their journey until Veigue's turn comes to meet the Beast of Water, Shaorune. Veigue's trial targets his doubts about Claire, and his fixation on returning her body to normal. He can't seem to reconcile her new appearance with the girl he knows, and it troubles him. Claire begins to realize this, and it troubles her, too. It all comes to a head when the emotions Veigue has been repressing cause his Force to go berserk and make him attack his companions, screaming Claire's name the whole time. Horrified, Claire decides that her presence does him no good, and runs off. She is picked up by Milhaust, the captain of the Queen's guard. He knows her identity but asks her to act as Queen for the time being, to assuage some of the people's fears, in return for his protection.

In the meantime, Veigue and the others manage to uncover the truth behind King Ladras's death. It turns out that his aide, Zilva, also possesses the Force of Moon that Agarte has: the ability to switch bodies with another person. She used her power to take the body of the king's physician, Dr. Barrs, and poison Ladras. With Agarte as Queen, she then had a young, troubled and malleable ruler to manipulate. The kidnapping of the girls was all done by her urging, to unsettle the kingdom and discredit Agarte enough for her to take power. Possessing a seething hatred of Huma, she swears to eradicate all of them once she is in control of Callegea.

Veigue and Claire reunite and manage to settle some of their differences, especially since Veigue received quite a scolding from his friends for his behavior. The group then leaves Agarte and Claire in Milhaust's care when they go to put an end to Zilva's plot, but the two women beg him to let them help. He relents, and leads them to the others. Veigue and Milhaust duel, Milhaust wanting to test the other's resolve and make sure he has the ability to defeat Zilva. Veigue wins, and his opponent wishes him luck. Claire and Veigue then exchange words of confidence in each other before the coming battle, their troubles finally resolved.
