Gabriel buried his face in his hands, unable to look at the man who had saved his life. He could feel the man's careful hand on his shoulder, hear his quiet voice murmuring soothing words into his ear. An angel in the flesh. But Gabriel knew he didn't deserve salvation.
Dimly he heard himself begging the stranger for absolution. "You don't know..." he said in a ragged, unsteady voice. "I've done terrible things. Hurt people. I had to stop myself. I didn't know what else I could do..."

Peter rubbed at his mouth as the man buried his face in his hands.
"Here, I'll tell you what we can do: we're going to get you cleaned up, I'll make us some tea, and you can help me with a little problem I have before my mother hunts me down and reams me for not completing my task."
Peter stood, offering the man his hand. "Deal?"

Gabriel drew a deep breath and hastily wiped away the tears streaking his face with his sleeve. He stared at Peter with amazement, and, despite himself, a hint of suspicion--was this man real? He had forgotten that decent human beings actually existed. Gingerly, he took the man's slender hand in his own clumsy, bony grasp. "Thank you...you're very kind." He got to his feet and adjusted his crooked glasses.
A beat of awkwardness passed as Gabriel tried to think of something to say. How did one react to the person who had stopped their suicide attempt? At the moment, he felt a prickling mixture of gratitude and humiliation.
"Here, I'll show you to the kitchenette." He led Peter through the back doorway to his small two-room apartment. "...What can I help you with? Anything--I mean, I feel like I owe you quite a bit."

"You want to talk about it?"

"I..." He set the tea down and looked at Peter. His eyes were very dark behind the thick lenses of his glasses. "I did something horrible. And I thought the only way to make it right was to get rid of myself." He surprised himself with the readiness of his confession.
