High rail riding!
Today for work I rode in a high rail car. A high rail car is a truck or van that has been converted to run on the rail. They do this by adding smaller flanged wheels to the front and rear of the car. This allows it to rest the weight of the car on the rail while still using the rubber tires as power. The steering wheel is locked in place and then it might as well be a little engine. The Gardener branch is such a pretty ride. It goes through a ton of reservoirs and wooded area. I imagine it looks stunning in the fall. During the ride, a train master pointed out everything on the track. The idea was to prep us for the qualification tests we need to pass. Afterwards their was lunch. Working on the railroad is weird. Even when it isn't all the live long day. So many customer sidings are no longer in use. So many branches are now out of service. It is actually quite sad to see the lost business that once was. On the other side, apparently the film Hachi was filmed in Woonsocket and there is a ton of PNW in the movie. The movie reminded me of the Futurama episode where Fry finds his old dog.
Side note: When doing LJ cuts, it becomes harder and harder to find cleaver things to replace "read more" with.
