Day 13

The viewing was today and IT. WAS. NOT as bad as I was afraid it would be.  It was actually very nice. She was a painter during her life, and so there were nice paintings to look at and photos and things. There was no family tension, possibly because that side of the family is so large and spread out that few people actually knew each other, and she herself looked very peaceful, which was a relief. She was the sweetest lady. There was a little baby boy there, and he was so adorable, and a (rather attractive) friend of my aunt's who said he was from the coastal New Jersey town that the event was held in, but that wasn't entirely true- it was hard to ignore the thick English accent. It was so heavy I almost had trouble understanding some of what he said (but whatever he said, it sounded delicious). He said he liked driving around where I live (which is in the woods) because it reminds him of home, and he told me I have to visit England soon so I can be sure he was telling the truth. I hope to oblige him.

An enormous feast followed the event, which was so many kinds of delicious. I was hungry, so I took a lot and sat down to eat it with another neice of my aunt's (I can't even fathom what kind of relationship that is in terms of family trees), who was also eating a lot. One of the men there looked at us and said he felt better about how much he had taken because we two young women were "eating like horses." He meant well, and I wasn't offended (partly because it was true) but he assumed that we were both married because we were eating so much. I had to laugh at that. She was indeed married, but I'm very unmarried. It struck me as funny and kindhearted. In any case, I continued to, as he so delicately put it, "eat like a horse."

:), beda, real-world weirdness
