I'm visiting Bonn again this summer for about 10 days. I'm flying Boston to Frankfurt (Lufthansa flight 421) and then Frankfurt to Bonn (Lufthansa flight 6814). This second flight is a 40-minute regional flight operated by an unusual carrier using an unusual airplane (Siemens Velaro) with a poky max speed of 300 km/h. Why am I subjecting myself to this you ask?
You'll stop wondering once I tell you that the carrier in question is Deutsche Bahn and the airplane in question is one of the
fastest trains in the world on a
new high-speed rail line. It's essentially a direct flight plus
free rail travel at the other end. (A flight to Frankfurt without the train would be the same price.) That sounded much better than spending a few hundred dollars more for the privilege of spending a few hours at Heathrow or Amsterdam. Not that I'm paying out of my own pocket. :-)
