☁ Red can't age or die, though he still needs to eat and sleep. The same goes for Pikachu.

☁ The exact circumstances leading to Mew saving his life were Mewtwo having been created by Team Rocket using some of Red's blood, which gave them a connection Mewtwo perceived as wrong. To raise its own legitimacy, Mewtwo was hostile, and attacked Red the first chance it got.
☁ Red's mom and Professor Oak are dead.
☁ Mt. Silver is an extremely dangerous place -- considered the greatest challenge for trainers, as only a very small number of those who enter the caves return.
☁ Red has seen a handful of those travelers, the ones who make it out are where the rumors about him come from.
☁ It's been about 40 years since Red ran away from the rest of the world.
