“He’s not contagious, but he is incredibly cranky.”

Nigel grinned at the nurse and pecked her on the cheek. “That’s not from the illness, trust me. What’s he got?”

“Walking pneumonia. The doctor is giving him a script for an inhaler and some antibiotics. You’ll make sure he takes them?”

“I’ll slip them into a bit of cheese if I must.”

The nurse smiled and poked Nigel with her pen. “You’re trouble.”

“Oh, only most of the time.” Nigel gave the nurse one last smile, then slipped down the hall to the exam room where Bug had been sequestered. He found Bug with the doctor, and he couldn’t help but take a bit of cheap amusement in the irritation that surrounded Bug like a cloud. “Mahesh, my love, are you well?”

“Shut up.” Bug glared at Nigel, but the effect was ruined when he started coughing in the dry, hacking way he’d had for a week. “I’m miserable. Some sympathy is in order.”

“But not likely. Who was it that told you to go to the doctor a week ago?”

“Garrett.”

“And?”

“Lily.”

“You know,” Nigel kept his tone conversational, “you could always call a cab.”

“You wouldn’t do that to me.” Bug rubbed at his eyes and looked all the world like a sick kid who just wanted to go home. Nigel supposed, given Bug’s hatred of anyone seeing him at less than his best, that he was probably pretty accurate in his guess.

“Are we nearly ready, Doctor?” Nigel asked the question as he stepped over to the left side of the bed and began to unfold Bug’s clothes so that he could slip them back on as soon as they had the go-ahead.

The doctor looked up from his chart and looked surprised at the sight of Nigel. “And you are?”

Nigel curbed the urge to roll his eyes. Yes, his ratty jeans and extra-old ‘Clash’ T-shirt weren’t exactly his best clothes, but it was his day off, and he’d gone for comfort. “I’m his ride.”

“Are you an immediate family member?”

Nigel wondered if the man had completely ignored the conversation he’d had with Bug when he’d walked into the room. He noticed the tired lines around the doctor’s eyes and remembered it was flu season, and decided to give the man the benefit of the doubt. “Yes, Sir. At least in Vermont.” He took the half-step that guaranteed that Bug couldn’t hit him. “Penicillin and an inhaler, right?”

The doctor nodded and handed over two pink prescription notes. “That’s correct. The nurse has talked to you, then?”

“Yes.” Nigel tucked the prescription notes into his back pocket and smiled at the doctor. “Thanks.”

“Sure.” The doctor gave a half-wave and left the room.

“Poor bastard. He’s probably exhausted.” Nigel handed Bug his undershirt and eyed his torso when he took off his hospital gown. “We’ve got to get some food into you. You’re getting thin.”

“It hurts to eat.”

“It probably hurts to do everything.” Nigel unbuttoned Bug’s pants and started sliding them up his legs. “Come on, Typhoid Mahesh, I’ll make you some broth, bundle you on the couch, and run to the chemist’s while you find some rerun to watch.”

Bug stepped off of the bed and braced himself against Nigel’s chest as the other man finished pulling his slacks up. “That sounds nice.”

Nigel put a kiss on the top of Bug’s head. “Yeah, it does, as long as there’s room on the couch for me.”

“Just keep your cold feet off of me.”

“Mahesh, my love, where’s the romance?”

Bug just shook his head and watched as Nigel tied up his sneakers. ~I think it’s right here.~
