You actually have most of your information correct. I don't think Apollo became a wimp, exactly. He just got Millar-ed, where horrible things happen to him for an extended period of time, and then he gets a shining moment of badass to come back from it, and that's great and everything, but it's definitely not how Ellis was writing it (everyone being a badass at various levels constatly), and it did bug me. But, Millar did have them get married and adopt the spirit of the 21st century, so he, at least, kept their relationship mostly consistent. (There is an instance where they're having a really bickery fight with some undertones that I did not like at all, but then it went nowhere, so...win?)

I should note that Millar's run wasn't horrible, but that he's a guy who always seems to have the core of an interesting idea and then it sort of loses all its interesting levels because he makes everyone sort-of super extreme and over-the-top and likes to have panels where people say stuff like "comics are for retards" (yes, really) to show how edgy he is.
