I'm struck by the fact that the part of it that bothers me the most isn't the plot holes or the meandering of the story, but the fact that Zooey Deschanel, while adorable, just isn't very good as DG. She's got about two expressions and two-and-a-half tones to her voice. When she's supposed to be surprised, she doesn't sound it.
And, I know I've mentioned this before, but putting her against Alan Cumming was just mean. Because Alan Cumming steals scenes without even trying, and he has a completely natural affinity for stage business, and Zooey just doesn't.
Also, she's up against Neal McDonugh and Callem Keith Rennie who play badass so well that I spend more time looking for them than watching Zooey. And she's supposed to be the most interesting character.
Happily, I still enjoy the general idea and feel of it and think I may have come up with a way to finish the epic fic I started way back when.
