I was reading the news online, and came across a story that was so off the wall, one could take it as a spoof. My first tthought was, "You've got to be joking! This is the kind of thing I'd expect to read in The Onion.

Fat lady trashes doc because he said she was obese and she would have more health problems if she didn't lose weight.*gasp ( Read more... )

Well, yeah. Like I said, the lawsuit is taking things way too far. I guess it just really pushed *my* buttons that he would presume to comment on people's love lives. I think we were reacting to different aspects of the article, basically. I see your point that hurtful issues still need to be addressed, but the love life comment kind of screamed fatphobia at me. It's something that I might not have reacted to quite so strongly a year or so ago, because I would have believed it was true, and though it would have made me feel like shit I would have figured "well, he's telling the truth". But my current girlfriend finds me much more attractive now, clinically overweight, than she would if I were thinner - she's told me so, and often enough that I know I can trust her. That's been huge for my self-esteem, and it's actually led to my eating better and becoming healthier - because the self-esteem has just been critical in getting myself to care enough, you know? It's much easier to work towards your own health when you feel like you matter, so to speak. Anyway, I guess I got a little touchy about this guy because it seemed like he was bringing women down, and that the reverse is much more effective. But I agree, too, that this woman was being oversensitive, and that there comes a point when a doctor just has to tell a patient what is best for her health, even if it's hard to hear.

It's kind of a complicated issue, I guess. I'm sorry if I went off on you, I was more mad at him (and even then, mad about one specific thing he said).

No worries :)
You were totally spot on about people reacting to the same thing in different ways, it's human nature as we bring our own experiences to bear when we learn something. As to being overweight, there is nothing wrong with it, until you reach a certain point where it becomes a major health risk. It's when you reach the obese level that starts complicating your body's systems that they really have to stress it. I guess I took the love life thing as how my doctor deals with it. He wants to know how my life is doing, besides my physical health because my mental health directly affects my body. I would like to think he meant that in a more positive way than it sounded, but only he really knows what he was thinking. I just hope she gets the help she needs, and he doesn't get into trouble.

As to women being clinically overweight, I completly agree with your girlfriend! Deb does the same thing, gets all paranoid about it. I think she's beautiful. Hell, woemn are supposed to be curvy and soft and snuggly and...umm, I'll stop now...hehe

And there is nothing more uncomfortable than someone sitting on your lap and thier ass is bony!
