Name: Kairi
Series: Kingdom Hearts (2)
Canon: OU
Age: 15
History:
Though Kairi grew up on Destiny Islands with Sora and Riku, she wasn't born there. Originally, she lived in Radiant Garden with her Grandmother; neither of her parents are ever mentioned, though it's hinted that she may have some connection to the Ruler of said world. It's in Radiant Garden that she met Aqua. When she was four, she was chased down by a group of Unversed (creatures who feed off negative emotions). Aqua saved her, and even noticed that Kairi's heart was made purely of Light. During a standoff, a frightened Kairi touched Aqua's Keyblade; unintentionally performing a Keyblade Inheretance Ceremony. (Basically, the ability to use the Keyblade was passed on to her, though neither realized it happened.) Mickey arrives when the girls are about to be attacked and Aqua sends Kairi to safety.
When things are safe again, Kairi returns to give flowers to Aqua, thanking her for saving her. It's then that Aqua places a charm on Kairi's necklace. "One day when you're in trouble, the light within you will lead you to the light of another, someone to keep you safe." Approximatlely one year later, Radiant Garden was submerged in Darkness, everyone in the world scattered to other places. Kairi is no exception.
She wakes up on the shores of Destiny Island during a metero shower with no memories beyond her name. It's believed that Ansem, Seeker of Darkness sent Kairi to the islands as an experiment to test any possible connection betwee Keyblade weilders and the Princesses of Heart. Kairi is one. The real reason being because of the charm Aqua placed on her necklace; it sent her to the Light of another. Sent her to Sora. She's taken in by the Mayor of the city and eventually adopted.
Later, Kairi becomes very close friends with both Sora and Riku, who always seem to playfully compete for her attention. Of course, she often tends to support these contests, though she does not really realize they were for her affection and not just innocent rivalry. Because she has no memory of her life on a previous world, both Sora and Riku's curiosity is peaked- They're anxious to leave the Islands, to explore and see other worlds too.
The trio set about building a raft in hopes of travelling to other worlds. Before they can leave though, the island is attacked by Heartless. Sora goes to check on the raft at night- a storm is coming, but he finds Kairi in the Secret Place (hidden in a nook of the Island where drawings litter the walls). When she turns to look at him, she looks tired, almost ill. A huge gust of wind sweeps through a door in the back of the cave and Kairi flies towards him. Sora moves to catch her, but she flies right through, as if an illusion, an vanishes. It's suspected that her heart chose Sora as it's vessel-- so when she passed through, her heart was left behind whilst her body vanished to another world.
She becomes the game's driving force since most of the game's story moves around Sora and Riku's attempts at finding her. Unfortunately, Riku is hostile to Sora (he's been manipulated by Maleficent into believing that Sora no longer cared for either Kairi or himself.)
Sora's journey leads him to encounter multiple images of Kairi without realizing that Kairi's heart is a part of his own. When he wakes up in the motel room after his fight with Leon, he sees Yuffie as Kairi, and mistakes her to be Kairi until told otherwise. He sees her again when he visits the Magician's Study, but she vanishes when Goof calls out to him. Again in Deep Jungle, she reappears for a short moment behind Tarzan and disappears again without saying anything.
While heading off to Hollow Bastion, Donald and Goofy encourage Sora to believe in himself, and from somewhere within Sora, he hears Kairi say "I believe in you." before pulling him into one of her lost memories about her Grandmother. The memory is of her Grandma telling her younger self the story about the Light. It's speculated again, that Kairi was partially experiencing Sora's journey from within his heart, including befriending Donald and Goofy.
Riku finds her first, out of the two boys however. She is in a comatose state with a vacant, lifeless expression and a limp body. She had lost her heart, but because of her Princess status, her body remained untouched by the Darkness. Hence, no Heartless had been created. Empty promises from Maleficent convinced Riku that he was the only one who could save Kairi, that he was the only one able to locate her heart and restore it to her. The first attempt is made when Riku, while inside Monstro, attempts to steal Pinnochio's heart to restore Kairi. It doesn't work, and only serves to confuse Sora, who doesn't know of Kairi's fate yet.
In Neverland, Sora finally finds her, although it comes with a painful reunion with his best friend. Riku is very defensive of Kairi, and ends up locking her in a room with Wendy so that Sora cannot get to her. When Sora does finally find a place close enough- the cell below her, desperately hoping for a reaction... Her hand moves, unconsciously, towards him. Sora is only just beggining to realize the full lengths of Kairi's 'condition'. Riku takes her away yet again however, having new information about where Kairi's heart might be. But the frienship is severed for the time being. Sora continues with his journey, as does Riku, both destined to clash against one another in the future over the third party of their trio.
It's in Hollow Bastion where Sora follows Riku and Maleficent, finally learning of Kairi's real fate. However, it's Ansem who, while possessing Riku, reveals that Kairi's heart is actually resting inside Sora's own, and has been this whole time. That's why Kairi's body reacted whenever Sora drew near. He also tells that Kairi is one of the seven Princesses of Heart, 'a maiden whose heart holds no darkness, and is needed to open the Final Keyhole (which opens the Door to Darkness).
Sora defends himself from Ansem's attempts to take the heart from Kairi, but once the battle is won in favor of Sora... He sacrifices himself with the Keyblade of People's Hearts to free his friend's heart. This releases his own heart as well, which turns Sora into a Shadow Heartless. But Kairi is finally awakened, her heart restored, and she runs to him. As soon as she comes in contact with him, he vanishes. She refuses to believe he's gone however, and prepares to fight the Heartless that surround her with the help of Donald and Goofy. "This time, I'll protect you!" She is prepared to fight for and protect Sora's heartless.
When Ansem returns, Riku's spirit stops him from attacking, urging her to flee- and she does. Devasted as she is, she, Goofy and Donald attempt to escape Hollow Bastion, but are cornered b the Heartless. She recognizes Sora's heartless from the group right away, and even manages to bring him back from the Darkness by embracing him, promising to protect him. It seems that finally, each heart has moved into their respective owners. They escape Hollow Bastion, which they find out is Kairi's original home (though it had then been called Radiant Garden, and one day will again). They find shelter in Traverse Town where she could be kept safe by Leon and the others.
In the game, Sora finds Kairi in the underground water tunnel after speaking to Leon. She mentions offhandedly how much the place reminded her of their Secret Place back on the islands. When he was lost in the Darkness, Sora witness one of Kairi's memories: Her as a little girl, wandering around the Hollow Bastion library with her grandmother. Sora mentions this and it is revealed that after her heart was restored, Kairi was able to remember certain things from her past. Though she wants to help rescue Riku and stop the Darkness, Sora convinces her to stay put, not wanting her to get hurt again... He jokingly says that she would only be in his way, when in reality, she probably would. He tells her that since their hearts were one, they'll always be together. Kairi eventually concedes and gives Sora her lucky charm which also doubles as an Oathkeeper.
In the game's final cutscene, she appears on the section of Destiny Islands after Sora's final battle with Ansem, considerably confused. Sora runs to her, too late, as the world is breaking apart, restoring itself, as well as all the previously destroyed worlds. Before she is sent back however, Sora promises that he will come back to her as soon as he finds Riku and King Mickey (who had been on the inside of the Door to Darkness, as it needed to be both pushed and pulled shut.) She is then transported back to the shores of Destiny Islands without him, wistfully watching the island regenerate itself around her, Sora's goodbye still fresh in her mind.
When the world is fully restored, she returns to the Secret Place, looking at the pictures that she and Sora had drawn over the years. One picture that she had drawn had, at some point, been altered by Sora. He'd drawn himself giving her a Paopu Fruit, and she is moved to tears... She adds to it, the picture changed to both of them exchanging two halfs of the fruit.
Kairi never directly appears in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, though she played a very important part. She served as a constant figure of light for both Riku and Sora and fervently waited for them back on the Islands.
In Sora's journey, Namine was told to take Kairi's place in Sora's heart by Marluxia. Namine says later on, that she could never really replace Kairi because she is simply Kairi's shadow. Kairi's image does show up in Destiny Islands when Sora remembers that the person he holds dear to his heart is Kairi, not Namine. When Sora is about to go to sleep, Namine tells him that if he remembers "the one most important to him" his memories will restore faster. So Sora looks deep into his heart and finds Kairi.
Riku's journey has Zexion tormenting him with an illusion of Kairi (as well as Tidus, Selphie, Wakka and Sora). However, Namine takes Kairi's form to help Riku control the light and darkness in his heart before the face-off with Zexion.
In the credits, Kairi is shown still waiting for the boys to return home.
At the start of Kingdom Hearts 2, Kairi is now fifteen years old, living her life normally on Destiny Islands. She goes to school with her friend Selphie and has noticeably aged; longer hair and more defined features. It's assumed she spent most of her time focused on school and her studies, thinking about the boys she's forgotten and hanging out with her friends (Tidus, Wakka and Selphie)- all of whom returned to the Islands safely. She's also become slightly more withdrawn because of Sora's absense, grown with wisdom beyond her years. She's not as brash or bold as she was in the first game, but is still sociable enough. She knows that both Riku and Sora have great destinies that need to be fulfilled, but that won't stop her from thinking about taking action and searching for them on her own.
She misses Sora, but most of her memories of him have faded because of Namine's interfering with is own memories. (It made everyone else forget him too, and while Sora is asleep, restoring, everyone else's is too, technically.)
One day on her way home, her heart comes in contact with a young boy named Roxas, later revealed to be Sora's nobody. It seems that Roxas was trying to contact Namine; Kairi's nobody, but ended up reaching her instead. During the conversation, Roxas brings up Sora, and when Kairi inquires about the name, Sora himself, despite being in stasis, somehow uses Roxas as a conduit to talk to her. He chastises her for forgetting his name, jokingly hinting ("Starts with the letter S!")
Not too much later, Kairi sends out a letter in a bottle, out to sea in hopes that it would reach Sora one day. The timing is perfect (assuming that it happens the same time Sora wakes up) and she seems to remember both his name and, we assume, everything else about him. ("Starts with an S... Right, Sora?") This is, by the way, the only time Kairi and Roxas ever have a conversation.
Axel comes to Destiny Islands one day under orders, and tells Kairi to come with him. She refuses and Axel eventually ends up summoning a group of Nobodies. Pluto, Mickey's dog rescues her with another portal for her to escape into. It leads to Twilight Town where she meets Hayner, Pence and Olette. They befriend almost immediately, even leading Kairi to explain for whom she's searching for. Thankfully, the three friends know Sora and assure her she could stay in Twilight Town until his next visit.
Unfortunately, Axel finds her again and this time, he captures her. Olette, Pence and Hayner's attempts do nothing to prolong it.. Saix finds Axel with Kairi though, and takes her to the World That Never Was as a prisoner. She will be "the fire that feeds Sora's anger." Devasted, Kairi thinks all hope is lost until she is freed by her Nobody, Namine. Namine uses a corrider of Darkness to let them escape the cell, telling Kairi to believe in herself.
It works, and they begin their escape.. But they are stopped by Saix and two Berserker Nobodies; he offers to take Kairi to Sora, but she refuses. Saix readies himself to send the Nobodies in to attack, but the girls are saved by a cloaked figure. Namine hints at who he is, causing him to pause as Kairi strides towards him and pushes back the hood. Her guess is right, and it is indeed Riku, despite his appearance being that of Xehanort's Heartless. She takes it in stride though, and is just happy to be reunited with Riku after so long. Riku leads her to Sora and is attacked by a group of Heartless; he gives Kairi a Keyblade (Destiny's Embrace, one of Aqua's originally) and they manage to fend off the rest of the Heartless. Finally, she is reunited with Sora.
After a touching hug, she turns to stop Ansem/Xehanort's Heartless (Riku) from leaving and shows Sora that it's actually Riku. Sora's reunion is a little more tearful with him out of the three meetings. The trio, with Donald and Goofy face off against the remaining Organization members and Kairi stands as a pillar of support during said battles. She is not a fighter, nor playable character, unfortunately.
Once Sora and Riku defeat Xemnas, Namine appears and creates a portal for them to leave through. Donald, Goofy and Mickey all go, leaving Sora, Riku and Kairi.. Lairi walks towards Namine with Sora in tow; she thanks her as Namine tries to make Sora remember who she is. Sora is just confused. Roxas comes out of him then, as holographic in appearance as Namine currently is. The two Nobodies accept their fate together having to live within Sora and Kairi as they fuse back with their Somebodies. Kairi walks into the portal, but Sora and Riku are left behind to fight Xemnas once more since the portal disappears.
When the boys finally defeat Xemnas for good, they arrive on the shore of the Dark Meridian. Kairi's letter in a bottle washes onto shore and Sora reads it. The Door to Light appears then, and the boys go through to arrive at Destiny Islands. (Well technically, they fall into the ocean and have to swim a short ways to the shores). Kairi is there on the beach, calling and waving to them. Sora brings out the lucky charm that Kairi had given him in the end of the first game, "W-We're back!" but Kairi corrects him. "You're home." and extends her hand. Sora takes it, meeting the charm between their grip. For a brief moment, Roxas and Namine are seen looking at each other just as Sora and Kairi are.
Soon after, a letter is sent to Destiny Islands where Kairi rushes it up to the boys. It's from King Mickey, however the contents are hidden from the player.
Personality:
While Kairi is caring and kindhearted, she is not afraid to speak her mind. She's determined, courageous, especially when someone she cares about is in danger. She wouldn't hesitate to put her own safety at risk just to save that someone, either. Sora's absense between the first and second games turned Kairi a little more withdrawn. Sora was a huge influence on her personality, since when she first arrived on the islands, she was more or less a blank slate. Sora was energetic and brash, playful; all of these traits of which rubbed off on Kairi. Without his presence being such a constant, she withdrew, mellowed out. It's possible this was how she behaved originally.
She makes friends easily, befriending the Twilight Town kids very quickly before she was kidnapped. Kairi is also, usually, very cheerful and upbeat- easy to get along with. And though she looks a little girlier in the second game, she still acts like more of a tomboy. Where Riku and Sora had both been a little bothered about her not remembering where she came from, Kairi took it in stride, never really being that worried about it. She looked at the positive side of things instead; she'd made great friends and had a happy life on Destiny Islands. She's loyal, headstrong and in some cases, can be pretty damn stubborn. She did grow up with two boys, after all, and they are just as, if not much more so, stubborn than she is. Her bond between both Sora and Riku is very strong, though Kairi seems particularly important to Sora, and vice versa.
Third-Person Sample:
The sand is cold at night, she remembers. What she doesn't remember, is being on a beach. She doesn't remember much, though. Darkness and the clash of metal and wind. Whatever it was, it wasn't there anymore. There was just sand against her cheek; cool sand. Opening eyes to the night didn't help much, but the moon was bright enough to illuminate the immediate area. Where was here? Was it the Island? She saw no trees, no paopu fruits or docks by the sea. Just jagged slopes of rock and cliff, the moon far out and large. It felt void of anything. Warmth, life; as if it had been night for eons. But that wasn't right; the world was always spinning, always between night and day.
Then why was she here, in this perpetual night time, sitting on a beach she didn't recognize?
First-Person Sample Journal Post:
[The feed is nearly silent, save for the soft clicking of something metal- something winding. And after a moment, the soft tunes of a lullaby begin plunking out from an old-sounding music box. It plays and plays, finally dying out as the wind up ends. Then the cranking begins again.]
Do any of you have sounds that mean something to you? Songs or melodies; something you remember from when you were little. Even a smell or an object. Something that makes you remember something from long ago.
[The little tune eventually fades out again. The cranking doesn't come again.]
Or even just something that makes you happy.
[The smile is audible even though it's plain as day on her face.]
