Updated History Begins Here (Note: Helena and I worked on this together and therefore this part of our apps is almost identical.)
After spending a year aboard the train both Hikaru and Kaoru went home. Finding themselves in the middle of nowhere about ten months on from their initial disappearance, they quickly secured themselves a place to stay for the night before each of them calling home and making their way to Hikaru’s parents’ the following morning. Kaoru’s parents come from England to see their son, and choose to stay a while. Hikaru quickly began making inquiries into potential remedies for Kaoru’s health, and organised a blood transfusion for him.
Around the same time there was a sudden increase in vampire activity, resulting in the Hitachiin clan being sent out to deal with increasingly violent groups of attacking vampires. Worried that the vampires might pose a threat to Kaoru, and in order to help his parents fight them, Hikaru repeatedly joined the sorties. In one fight just before Christmas their father was severely injured in a fight, resulting in their entire contingent rushing out to the hospital to support him.
Both families stayed together over Christmas. The blood transfusion, though only a temporary solution, served as a test-drive and proved that blood products donated by Hikaru stood a better chance of doing Kaoru good than those donated through regular channels. This meant that some treatments (that had been unsuccessful when Kaoru had first tried them) were open to him again as possible cures. Although unwilling to get his hopes up, they discussed possibilities and Kaoru agreed to a procedure on the condition that it was to be performed on home soil. In order to provide the donation necessary for the transfusion, and to provide his brother with support, Hikaru decided to go with him; using his links with the Hunters Council to find work in England. His stay is brief, however, as news of his parents’ deaths in battle in Japan causes him to go home.
Once Hikaru is back home in Japan, he starts making arrangements for his parents' funeral. He considers going after the vampires that killed them, but decides against it eventually. He has promised Kaoru to come back to England as soon as possible and this promise to his brother is more important to him than seeking revenge. When he returns to the train it has been about two and a half months since he and Kaoru first arrived home.

As a vampire hunter, Hikaru is stronger and faster than an average person. He's trained in martial arts and can fight with various weapons. Also, he can sense a vampire's presence from a great distance.
Personality:
Just like in canon, Hikaru is obnoxious and short-tempered. If something doesn't work the way he wants it to, he'll get angry. He's an independent person and not very considerate of other people. He prefers being on his own and hates sharing things with others. This changes though, once he starts liking someone and getting attached to them.
When he was twelve, he dyed his hair to black in order to shock his parents and later decided to keep it that way.
Still he isn't an overall bad guy. He spent so much time training to become a hunter that he seriously lacks social skills. But after being on the train for a year, he learned how to get along with others and even how to like (some of) them.
The role of being a hunter is nothing like destiny or a calling to him. It's something he does because it's his job. He isn't very fond of it but never seriously considered doing something else either. He's good at what he does and that makes him proud and encourages him to keep going. His black and white outlook on vampires did change though, after he met Ziva on the train. He took an interest in her as a vampire (and secretly as a person as well) which makes him rethink his attitude towards vampires.
The recent death of his parents did affect him but not as much as it probably would others. As a vampire hunter, he knew that there was always a great risk of them being killed at some point. He was prepared for it to happen sooner or later. The two months off the train mainly brought him and Kaoru closer together. He's the only family Hikaru has left now and therefore he's going to protect him by all means.
Possessions:
Hikaru still has his backpack and sword. Actually, his mother's sword but he'll deny that to anyone who asks.
