It's the American Dream, not the American Promise...

I've been meaning to write this for a long time, and given a certain presidential candidate's attitude towards a certain company, I'm finally putting it on paper. Keep in mind, as friends, I value your opinion and would like to hear your thoughts on what I am about to write. Before we start, I would also like to state that I do not agree with the ( Read more... )

I'll try to address some specific points:

1. Healthcare: Get rid of all the frivolous lawuits and about 60% of the nations healthcare problems are solved. This should be our first priority.

2. While I'm sure that many people do not abuse welfare/social security/foodstamps, I still believe that all you should get is a warm bed, food for sustinance (maybe just rice and beans, proven to provide protein and nutrients needed to sustain life at a quality level), and nothing more. I will still feel slighted until this happens.

3. VERY valid point about the Bridge to Nowhere and other pet projects that are snuck in. When the country was started, there were no professional politicians, they were all farmers or business owners first that conviened when needed to aid the country. Being a good speaker or having a communications/poli-sci degree does not qualify you to set public policy.

Election years get me all riled up.

Just to clarify the point of social security:

You pay it now so that when you're old and feeble you'll be taken care of by the younger people who are all saying "why is my paycheque going to social security?" Mind you I don't know how it works in America, I know it's markedly different than the social security program I'm used to but the gist is the same. You pay the old people to stay alive so you can get a turn on that ride when you need it.

I understand there are 401(k) programs and the like, and with smart* investing a person can save/earn enough off their investments to fully enjoy their golden years. But I don't know enough about all that to give an opinion on whether America would be better off with or without it.

Also did you get any mail yet?

*It doesn't have to be that smart, it just has to be not stupid.

Got the package a couple days ago, thanks man.

The problem with the system is that if I tried to set up my own social security using the exact same guidelines, I would be put in jail for a ponzi scheme (check it on wikip).

You should save for your own retirement, and if you cannot or refuse to do so be stuck with a bed and basic meals, but no more. I firmly believe that you can support human life and incentivise good choices and hard work at the same time.
