I found it a little bit insulting that Jane was 'updated' from a nurse to an astrophysicist in the film, because nurses are amazing. They have one of the hardest jobs around. They work long hours in conditions that can be extremely confronting (and on occassion, dangerous), and they care a huge amount about helping people.

On that note, I would really love an au of the film where Jane is still a nurse.

Chapter 10

“Jane, friends, you must leave now.” Thor’s face was grim, and Jane grabbed his arm.

“What are you going to do?”

“I am staying.” Fandral grinned at his companions, and crowed, “Thor’s going to fight with us!”

“Then I’m staying too.” Beside Jane, Darcy and Erik straightened their spines and nodded.

Thor sighed and turned to the Warriors Three. “My friends, I am now no more than any mortal man - I not only cannot fight with you, I would even slow you down. But I can get these people to safety.” He looked to Jane, who nodded, and turned back to the Asgardians. “I need time.”

“You shall have it,” Volstagg promised, and Sif put a hand on Thor’s forearm and squeezed as they turned and fell into an attack formation. Thor returned to Jane; Erik ran for the midmorning crowd in Isobel’s Diner, and Darcy started down the street yelling, “Let’s MOVE IT, people!”

Jane pointed to a building. “Day care.” Thor’s face went blank, and she explained, “Children.” He nodded. “Get them. I will find transport.”

Jane sprinted into the day care, and Thor rushed to a nearby parking lot chock-a-block with pickup trucks. He spotted a driver inside one and rapped on the window. “We need your vehicle!” He pointed to the fires. “My friend has gone to collect children from the - day-care? - you must take them as far from town as you can!”

The man opened the door and tugged Thor’s sleeve, pulling him toward the truckbed. “Help me shift this crap outta the way, and I’ll take as many as you can fit in here,” he said, and spotting a friend across the lot yelled, “DAVEY!”

Within six minutes Thor had lined up a small fleet of pickups, and Jane had argued, begged and bullied the day care staff into lining up the children and leading them across the street. They passed small bodies from hand to hand, loading up one flatbed after another.

Thor spared a glance toward the Destroyer; Volstagg had decoyed the armor into position, and Sif leapt from a rooftop to spear it through the base of its neck. Its head fell limp, and he heard Volstagg’s laugh; but Thor tapped the back window of the last truck and sent it on its way regardless.

Jane, Darcy and Erik crowded around Thor to watch. Sif had time only for a satisfied smile before the fire raged in the Destroyer’s faceplate once again, and all its segments began rotating. Volstagg leapt for safety as it refocused on Sif and flung her away from it; she grabbed her multiweapon as it slid free of the armor’s neck.

Thor sucked in a breath, put an arm around Jane and gave her a shake. “Go. Now. RUN.” Darcy grabbed Jane’s arm and the three of them ran. Thor crept around the SUV where Sif had already taken cover. “Sif. You have done all you can here. Stand down.”

“No. I will die a warrior’s death,” she vowed through pained gasps. “Tales will be told of this day.”

He cupped her chin in one hand. “Live, and tell them yourself. Now GO.” He sent her running just as a blast of fire from the Destroyer flipped away their automotive cover.

He took her shield and made for the Warriors Three. Sharp cries from one side drew his focus; the Destroyer had shattered a plate-glass window, and its shrapnel caught Jane, Erik and Darcy in midflight. Selvig appeared to have the worst of the bleeding, as Darcy and Jane were trying to minister to him and pull him along to safety at the same time; he guessed the scientist had tried to shield the two women with his body, and Thor knew he had chosen well in his friends.

He reached the Warriors Three, who held Fandral up between them, smarting from the last blow he’d taken. “You must return to Asgard, my friends. You must stop Loki.”

“What about you?” Volstagg asked between breaths heavy from exertion.

Thor smiled his cockiest smile. “Do not worry, my friends, I have a plan.” Fandral and Hogun smiled back, though Volstagg looked doubtful, and they left him to hurry to the mortals standing outside Selvig’s lab. “We need to fall back,” Thor heard Fandral tell them, but turned his back, dropped Sif’s shield, and started walking.

“WAIT!” he heard Jane’s cry behind him, but his pace never slowed. “What is he doing?”

They watched him walk through the wreckage of Main Street to face the Destroyer. Saw him stop, look up to speak to it words they couldn’t hear, raise his arms in - surrender? supplication? - and seven breaths held, waiting for the Destroyer’s next act.

It turned away, and Jane made a tiny sound in her throat.

Then it backhanded Thor, and sent him flying clear back to where they were standing.
