I found it a little bit insulting that Jane was 'updated' from a nurse to an astrophysicist in the film, because nurses are amazing. They have one of the hardest jobs around. They work long hours in conditions that can be extremely confronting (and on occassion, dangerous), and they care a huge amount about helping people.
On that note, I would really love an au of the film where Jane is still a nurse.
Chapter 1 Thor submitted stoically to the blood draw and a visual and tactile physical exam by Dr. Marshall, under Jane’s watchful eyes.
“No broken bones I can detect. I could be mistaken, but I think you’re somewhat less bruised than you were when you were brought in,” he said.
“I have always healed quickly,” Thor replied.
“Then you’re something of a medical marvel,” the doctor replied, and checked Thor’s pupils with a penlight. “Not seeing any sign of concussion, but I’d like to do an echo and make sure that taser didn’t throw you into a-fib.”
“Echocardiogram, a monitor for your heart,” Jane explained. “To make sure the electric shock didn’t disrupt its rhythm. You won’t feel a thing, except maybe a little cold from the metal.” Thor nodded, and she wheeled a cartful of equipment over and began placing sensor pads over his chest. “So. You from around here?” she asked casually.
He closed his eyes. “I do not rightly know where here is. But I think I must be far from home.”
“New Mexico,” Jane said, and turned on the equipment. “Is that anywhere near where you were headed?”
“I - was not headed anywhere in particular,” he said tentatively. On a TV in a high corner a sports report came on with an unusually shouty announcer, and Jane turned to mute the sound. Thor followed her gaze and saw the words ‘Minnesota Vikings’ written across the bottom of the screen. Neither Jane nor Marshall noticed his reaction. Vikings. Of course. This is Midgard.
“Rhythm looks good,” Marshall said over his shoulder. “I’m still a bit worried about your loss of consciousness earlier, though. I’d like to keep you here a little longer, do a few more tests just to be on the safe side.”
Thor looked at Jane, who nodded. “I will stay. If Jane Foster will stay with me.” Her eyes flew to the doctor. He shrugged. “She seems to have a way with you. I’ll clear it with the charge nurse.”
“Hoboy. The other nurses are gonna love me. Their workload’s just doubled for the next little bit.”
“If I’ve made trouble for you, Jane Foster -”
She waved that away. “Nah. Doctor’s orders, and they’ll stand. It’ll be practically a vacation having only one patient. They can handle it, and I’ll owe them one. Except the ones that already owe me one.” She grinned. “Just let me go take care of some paperwork, okay, and then I’m all yours.” Thor grinned, and Jane saw a spark of a young man’s brash confidence was still in him.
She and Marshall stepped outside, charts in hand. “He’s got to be military, don’t you think?” she said. “We’ll have to get someone to call the nearest bases and see if they’re missing a guy.”
“He’s got the build for it, and the scars,” the doctor agreed. “The way he reacted when he woke up. PTSD, maybe.”
“Yeah, it’s a likely. But once he calmed down - I’m not sure that’s what we were seeing. Could it just be reaction to a specific trauma? Either that or he’s had PTSD long enough to get good at covering it,” Jane suggested.
“Well, either way he’s too dangerous to let wander off without looking into it first. I’ll order a 72-hour psychiatric hold, and you’ll have to stand as patient’s advocate, Foster, since he’s asked for you. Oh, and I do still want to do an MRI on the guy.”
“Of what?”
Marshall grinned. “Everything.”
