I found online a .cbr of the Supergirl Movie comic book adaptation, and being as it was amusingly hideous, I
posted a bunch of it to the
new scans_daily on dreamwidth. Since it brought back fond memories, I dug out my DVD copy of the movie. It's bad. In the hurts-so-good kind of way.
Some random observations:
- Peter O'Toole is in fact drunk off his ass, and the movie is a far better thing for it.
- Peter Cook is the prototype of Severus Snape in this movie.
- Joan Crawford is Mommie Dearest-bad when in Evil Mode, but oh god is she ever worse when she's in Seductive Mode - Mae West bad.
- Brenda Vaccaro! w00t!
- One of the thugs who menaces Kara is Matt Frewer! And some guy who seems like he should be Dennis Franz, but isn't. He's like the poor man's Dennis Franz, which you'd have to be pretty dang poor for one Dennis Franz not to fill all your greasy goombah needs...
- Ethan! Oh, Ethan, you adorable lump of protoplasm.
- Selena's mountaintop Fortress of Eviltude has the loveliest Frank Lloyd Wright-ish glass doors. Totally not in keeping with the Gothic-by-way-of-late-period-Cher-video style of the rest of the place.
- So, an evil sorceress has taken over your home town. What's the correct response? Why, PICKET, of course!
- I would be so much happier if Peter O'Toole were spouting Kryptonian six-dimensional geometry pseudoscience on the way out of the Phantom Zone rather than this EST-Esalen crap he's giving us on the way out of the Phantom Zone.
- So she needs Peter O'Toole's supership to get her from Argo City to Earth, but not to get back? But then she's holding the MacGuffin Omegahedron, so maybe that gets her home unprotected.
- Oh dear lord. There's a director's commentary track for this sucker. Do I dare????
I will say, for all the crap she's taken for this movie over the years, Helen Slater does not disgrace herself in the role. The movie's got a lot of problems, but honest to god they're far worse on the script and production level than anything the actors did.
