I've often complained about how plot and sex are so strictly divided in entertainment today. It's almost impossible to find a film that has talented actors playing empathetic characters who have sex on camera. I feel like this lack is directly correlated to the lack of women who are into hardcore porn. Let's face it: Sex is repetitive. There's only so much in-out-in-out you can watch of someone else doing it. The fun part comes when you get to do it. Sex on film becomes sexy when you can successfully imagine yourself as part of the action, as participant or voyeur or whatever. And I've always complained, in the past, that the strict plot/sex divide is hindering millions of people from fully embracing the sexiness that porn could be, if only real actors would get off their high horses and engage in a little on-screen penetration without worrying about how their careers will be shot.
Lately, though, I've changed my mind. As sexy mainstream shows push the envelope, more and more becomes capable of being trendy. The last thing I want is some girl pulling a move in bed that she saw on Sex in the City. People already copy this week's hairstyles, makeup, slang, and fashion. Sex is the last bastion of originality. Sure, there are books and guides and videos out there, but it's nothing like the frenzy of mainstream media. There are, as far as I'm aware, no "trendy" positions, or positions that have gone out of style. The Kama Sutra's still around, fer goshsakes! So I actually kind of hope that we do keep up this ridiculous modesty, if only to save me from experiencing a guy screwing me like he saw Will Farrell screw someone on Saturday Night Live.
