Are You Addicted to Your Job?

I was just reading a "Signs of Addiction" website, and it occurred to me that I probably need to do some outreach and stop my friends from engaging in destructive behavior.

* Do you feel the need to engage in behavior that keeps you from enjoying your life?

* Do you engage in this behavior even as you swear to "cut back," or "quit altogether someday?"

* Tolerance is the need to engage increasingly to get the desired effect, such as surpassing last year's goals or showing "improvement" at review time.

* Withdrawal happens when you do not engage in the activity, and experience unpleasant symptoms, which are often the opposite of the effects of the addictive behavior. Such as: losing money rather than earning it.

* You experience difficulty cutting down or controlling the addictive behavior. Do you work nights or request more hours?

* Your social, occupational or recreational activities become more focused around the addiction, and important social and occupational roles are jeopardized, such as skipping 'family time' to join your coworkers at the bar.

* You become preoccupied with the addiction, spending a lot of time on planning, engaging in, and recovering from the addictive behavior. Whole weekends can be spent recovering.

* You sleep a lot more or less than usual, or at different times of day or night. For example, you may no longer be able to upkeep your 'natural' schedule of 3am - noon.

* You experience changes in energy, or weight loss or weight gain, especially after taking a desk job.

* You are financially unstable, perhaps having large amounts of cash at times but no money at all at other times. Usually around the same time every month...

* You experience changes in social groups, new and unusual friends, odd cell-phone conversations...
