Background info on your character:
When you think of Death, what image comes to mind? A skeleton with a scythe? (Perhaps one that likes kittens?) That's one version, but there's another version where Death is a short, cute, kind of goth-looking girl, who watches Disney movies and says things like "Peachy Keen!"
This Death is one of The Endless, seven personifications (or manifestations, if you prefer) of different aspects of the universe. In order, they are: Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Despair, Desire, and Delirium. They are not gods, because they do not require belief to exist. They simply are, have always been, and always will be. They're older than the universe, and older than the oldest gods. They're also a family, and refer to each other as 'sister' and 'brother'. (And like some families, they're also a bit dysfunctional.)
Death is the second oldest of The Endless, and will be the last one to leave when the universe ends. As she puts it, she'll be the one to stack the chairs on the tables and turn out the lights. As for what happens after that? Not even she knows.
She is usually dressed simply in black jeans and a black top, but when the occasion calls for it, she will change to something a little more impressive. (On one occasion when she was particularly busy, she appeared dressed like an aerobics instructor, complete with leg warmers.) The one item that is common is the ankh she always wears on a necklace. Each of the Endless has a realm where they "live". Contrary to what you might expect, Death's realm resembles a normal apartment, complete with pet goldfish and a floppy hat collection. She will, however, reluctantly change it to make it dark and gloomy to better fit a visitor's expectations.
In spite of her function, she is far from a dark figure. Death is actually very cheerful, practically perky. She knows everyone, because she sees them twice - once at their birth and once at their death. She is compassionate and understanding when she comes for someone, even if they don't welcome her (and they usually don't). She is there for everyone, regardless of religion or belief, but she won't tell you what happens next, as what happens after death is different for everyone. A long time ago, tired of being met with fear and anger, she tried to become cold and unfeeling. Eventually she realized that that wasn't what people needed. They needed a friend as they made the transition from one state to the next, and now that's what she tries to be. In fact, once every hundred years, Death spends a day living as a human, the better to understand the lives of those she takes. At the end of the day, her human self dies and is met by her Endless self.
Although she is usually unrelenting in performing her duties, she can occasionally be swayed. At least once, she agreed not to take someone until they were ready to die, basically granting them immortality. She has also been known to accept one life in place of another. But even though it may seem that these people have escaped death, to her these agreements are ultimately temporary. In the end, she will take everyone. Death is patient.
Death obviously cares for all of her family, but she is probably closest to her next youngest brother, Dream. When Dream is depressed, she goes to him and tries to cheer him up. When that doesn't work, she throws a loaf of bread at his head and tells him to snap out of it, because he's indulged his self-pity long enough. Then she takes him with her on her rounds. Seeing her "at work" reminds Dream that all of the Endless have a job to do. Death looks after her youngest sister, Delirium, as much as she can, and occasionally tries to be the family peacemaker (with mixed success).
Although Death knows everyone's name and how and when she will eventually take them, she doesn't know every detail of their lives. She enjoys listening to them tell the stories of how they lived. She spends quite a bit of time with one woman, listening avidly to the story of how she and her girlfriend met and fell in love. Another time she stops to talk to someone, because she was passing by and heard the woman crying.
Also, what they were doing when they got pulled to the island, any relations with anyone else? Etc)
Death decided to visit. Why not? She was curious about a place where no one ever dies. Technically there isn't anyone on the island from her canon, but she still knows everybody.
Death is taken from just before "The Kindly Ones" in Sandman canon.
Sample post: (First person point of view, please)
Well, I have to admit, this wasn't what I expected. Although honestly I wasn't sure what to expect. It isn't every day that I find a place where I'm not needed. The people here don't seem to truly die, and there are a few here that I know I've already taken. I thought it might be another instance of someone trying to create a hiding place to avoid me, but it doesn't seem to work that way. It's more like a little pocket outside of time and space.
One of the mysteries of the universe, I guess! Even the Endless don't know everything. That would really be boring. Although, now that I think about it, Destiny must know about this place. Everything that will ever be is written in his book. I'm sure if I'd asked, he'd have said something suitably cryptic. The rest of the family seems to be well represented. The people here still dream, still desire, and so on. Destruction's influence is here too, even though he's resigned his duties. Apparently it's just me that's shut out. I could almost feel hurt.
But not really! I think we'll just call this a little vacation for me. Some sun, some sand, and some relaxation. It's nice not to have any immediate responsibilities. Usually I only get one day off every hundred years. Maybe I'll sit down with the island some time and have a chat. I'm sure it has plenty of stories to tell. And the people here come from so many different times and places! It's a nice change to be able to talk with them and not be working.
I wonder if Dream will feed my goldfish?
