My sports Promotions class went to a Cleveland Indians' game today. We rented a bus so no one would have to drive there and back. I had been forwarned by friends who have taken the class before and numerous, not so subtle hints, given by my class mates, that this trip would have some heavy drinking involved for those who choose to partake (so everyone but me). I considered not going, but it was supposed to be a class bonding and reward for all the hard work we did organizing and putting on MC Community Baseball Day (our class project). So I figured, why not. I had prepared myself for being basically ingored and left out of much of the activities on the bus. So I brought a book and CD's and a radio to listen to during the game, I was all set. I sat myself near the front of the bus and got situatied and then learned this was a wise move, since one of our classmates (a grad student, who is also Cheif of our Campus Police) had gone out and bought cases of beer. Thankfully, they also brought some cans of pop. After being offered several times and respectfully declining a drink, I figured, that was the point I'd be left alone, as usual. I'm pretty quiet and self reserved on these types of trips where I don't have at least one close friend with me. I know this could be a shock to you guys, since basically, once I know you it seems like sometimes I never shut up.
Suprisingly, some of the least likely people, decided to actually try and endaged me in thier converstaions, reguardless of the fact I didn't want to drink. Two seniors, whom I don't really know that well, except for what I hear through the grapvine at small schools and the experiences I've had with one of them in classes over the years. The one really suprised me b/c he actually truely felt bad, thinking that I felt left out being the only non-drinker (including my professor and deparement secretary and Cheif of Campus Police). He didn't take my normal, response of I'm fine, and the other things I come up with to basically make my point without offending anyone and ending the conversation. He and his friends were much nicer then I had thought. I can admit when I'm wrong and perhaps I judged them a little hastily. They didn't just try one coutesey conversation either. They were smart enough to realize that even through I had my headphone on and was reading, I could still hear everything they said, since they were sitting all around me basically, and would throw a comment my way every now and then. Neadless to say I didn't get much reading done and missed most of the songs on my CD. I wasn't even really pressured as much as usual to drink. The one only continued to asked b/c he genuinly felt bad since everyone else was drinking either beer and liquor or a combo. He even offered me some of his own personal stash of liquor, which is unusual for a college student. He said he knew what is it flet like to be the only sober person and how it can get annoying sometimes. It was nice to fianlly have someone give me a better reason then, won't you have just one drink so everyone is drinking, and such stuff like that witch is just BS and one of the many reasons I refuse to even sip anything alcoholic on this campus.
Anyways, just an interesting story about my life now a days. I rarely have inetereting stories to tell so I figured I'd share. I'm down to two weeks of classes, a week af finals and then Senior Week before graduation. Hope everyone's semester is going well as well as grad school acceptances.
