It's been ages since I've updated so here goes. I'm currently working as a Math & Science Tutor Counsellor for Upward Bound on MSU's campus. Even though I figured this would be a complicated job, there's a lot more to it than I expected. It's the little things that sneak up on you, like a lecture by a lawyer telling us how much he would love to prosecute UB if we don't follow the handbook. For another part of our training, Dr. Reiley came in and gave us counseling tips that put some of us in really funny role-playing positions. Toby had to pretend she was pregnant and had head lice while I had to be afraid of showering and be enamoured by TJ. Funny times.
Yesterday was semi-organized chaos as the students were moving in, girls in Wilson, guys in Cooper. Wilson is a little rough, but it's more than livable, obviously. Unfortunately we had to scramble to get blinds for some of the windows... the girl's parents were a little concerned about that! We took Mr. Gatti's by force and took the students on campus tours. Our crazy group meeting (I'm in charged of 6 girls personally) lasted an hour and a half. Lots of rules but they'll live.
Today is the first full day of classes. I woke the girls up at 7am, went to breakfast, and now have the morning off before and after our staff meeting at 10am. After lunch, I am a TC in a Career Planning Class (I tried for comic book lit but didn't get it :( ) Then I have an hour of Residence Hall Duty and then have to be the TC authority in an Emergency Preparedness class. I met the guy who is teaching that and he told me it's a class that he teaches all the time at Boy Scout Camps. Lots of first aid and knots all around. After that we have supper, group pictures, and an ice cream social. It's a super-structured program but it's fun too. I'm trying to get to know the students a little at a time. We'll see about some of them. The TC's are all a lot of fun. One night after our training Craig, Dan, Toby, and I ended up walking to Sonic the extremely long way. It was nearly 11:30 and the car hops were not pleased to see us.
Lately I've been hanging out with Toby a lot and she has introduced me to Bluegrass music. While it's not my thing really, I had a good time going to the Bluegrass and More festival (and it was free, yay). That draws a bit more diverse of a crowd than I expected. There were a lot of families with small children but also a good crowd of teenagers and university professors. Interesting to say the least.
