Tonight, for Girls' Night, we assembled Halloween crafts usually marketed at third graders. Most relaxing thing I've done in a while. I like to waste time but have something to show for it. If only I could get my knitting on track again. I have at least three unfinished projects in the works, not to mention several uninitiated gifts I've promised people.
Becca, the friend who hosted tonight, has a gigantic weaving loom and is going to show me how to use it. She is such a visual person that we were having trouble communicating the craft, but I think I could get used to it once I got going. I only saw a small portion of the process but it's really neat that you can manipulate yarn (basically 2 dimensions) in three dimensions to come up with such a well constructed product so efficiently. Becca had to remind me that inventors did not just will the loom into existence as it is today. Each advance is a modification on a previously existing structure which grants both advantages and limitations to what is invented. Just like evolution. It's not aiming to be perfect, it's aiming to be good enough to accomplish a goal. And it doesn't all happen at once. Neat stuff.
I would also like to petition K-mart to get on the ball with their Halloween offerings. It's October 7th and there were no pumpkins to be found! I was so disappointed, I wouldn't even buy Halloween candy from them. And when I won't buy a bag of Milky Ways, you know it is distressing.
