Take your pick from the Iraq war. The Jessica Lynch saga, as well as the "Iraqis firing after showing white flags" reports.

The former IS today debunked, but wasn't when it counted, and the debunking certainly never received anything like the attention the initial report did. A few days after the 'rescue' the hospital staff went on the record as saying that they had in fact tried to return Pvt Lynch to the American lines in a clearly marked ambulance, but had to turn to back when they were fired on by American troops.

The latter received no attention whatsoever.

In fact I had a certain LJer (who professed to be anti-war) who, when I posted photographs of Iraqi soldiers killed by US helicopters while waving white flags, informed me it was 'propaganda' and that US forces would never do something like that. It was in fact the Iraqis who were rightfully killed while breaking the Geneva Convention.

Today it's been completely debunked, but those corrections went nearly unnoticed.

WMDs? Yep, yer dead on there. Just about everything from the Mess-O'-Potemian Catastrophuck smacks of revisionism.

And now, let's all chant the US citizen sanity mantra:

"1-20-2008, 1-20-2008, 1-20-2008, 1-20-2008, 1-20-2008. . . ."
