Where were you on January 19, 1981? I can tell you where I was for at least part of the day, easily ( Read more... )

Yes, it sounds like a lot of your conservative/liberal/progressive tendencies originated as reactive rebellion. Digging for facts and substantiation would make that rebelliousness more yours.

I think a lot of folks politics begin as reactionary blindness. It takes work and discomfort to construct more coherent identities.

As an example of my own youthful "ebullient patriotism" I went SpecOps. Today that's about as far away from my ideals as supporting Reagan might be from yours. In a sense, such drastic divergences represent 'growing up'.

Being somewhat older than you (I was 24 in 1980) I was suspicious of the "Hostage Release" when it happened. The timing was just too pat. That and my mother made some comments - she was even more suspicious than I was despite the fact that she always claimed that when she helped out at the polls in the 1960s the republicans had done LESS to alter the votes than the democrats. (note - less, not nothing.)

I would have voted for Carter had I been 4 months older. He's a great guy - Still builds houses for the homeless - But hopelessly naive when it came to that election.

Any bets on when the treason charges will be forthcoming? :D

Awesome and scary stuff.

I have realized that nothing scares me more than people who unquestioningly believe things which they know next to nothing about. The willingness to trust without even any curiosity towards verifying.... *ugh*

I see it all the time on the right, but the progressives have huge blinders all to often too. *sigh*

I am looking forward to the rest of this series.
