i make these mixes over the course of the whole year - when a song really strikes me on first listen, i make a point of adding it to an itunes playlist like the obsessive-compulsive girl i sometimes take pride in being. when "best of 2004" reached two and a half hours, i decided to eliminate all songs from my top ten albums, as well as anything for which i had trouble finding a place immediately. so all of these were unceremoniously cut in favor of guilty pleasures, covers and mashups:
