I only know Cumberbatch from the BBC Sherlock series, but the fact that he and Martin are co-stars in that makes it funny that they'll both be in the Hobbit, too. :)
I think you're right about Martin Freeman. He does kind of look like Merry. I think he's going to be a good Bilbo.
I don't know about the new female character though. I don't think I'm going to like that bit. I think it's a bit insulting that they always feel they have to put a woman into the film. Women went and saw all of the LOTR films and they weren't there to see Arwen. If this new character is important to the film, then it might be ok, but as far as I'm concerned, The Hobbit has a large enough cast as it is. I can't see that they need new, made-up Mary Sues, er, characters. LOL
Ok, enough ranting from me now. I'm going back to my corner.
i hope it's not a Mary Sue but a vital character for plot development and such-- given that it's not from the books, that is why i'm wary. There *could* be good female characters and it's not necessarily insulting to "always" need a woman but more woman in a generally male dominating book would be a welcome change. Hope PJ won't mess it up though.
Did you get to see LotR on the big screen these past 3 weekends? :)
Oh, can we stop picking on the Tauriel character already? I'm looking forward to her, as I was looking forward to Lobelia, Goldberry, Rosie, Arwen, Galadriel, Éowyn and Ioreth. It's not even known what part she will have in the movie (so much for 'women weren't there to see Arwen'), so why is everyone crying wolf Mary Sue?
Looking forward to Bilbo, too - Martin Freeman looks fantastic in-costume, and I'm sure he's going to rock his role. :)
Ioreth, Goldberry and Lobelia weren't in the movies though which was unfortunate. I would have liked to see Ioreth in teh Houses of Healing Extended scene but alas, she wasn't there. I'm iffy about Tauriel just because she's not from the books and it's obvious by casting Evangeline LIly, they're trying to put a big name in the movies which could be good and bad-- good for publicity, bad if it's going to alter the Hobbit storyline too much.
I don't think it'll be a Mary Sue-- but i just am wary about what part she'll play.
Martin Freeman! <3 love him already-- looks slightly Merry-ish though.
