I think that's great too. Tolkien just laid it on the line for them all and didn't care what they thought of it.

Tolkien has great attitude regarding it...i remember he was very nervous for publishing this but it's important for any author to not pay too much attention to the critics if you know that you've written the best you could.

*grin* I love so much that he--even after over a thousand pages and dozens of revisions and *years* of work--thought it was too short, too! *giggle*

That's why I think he would understand our compulsion to fanfic--he might not necessarily approve of the results of our efforts, but he'd most certainly understand *why* we do it...

Probably he could agree to some based on canon... but the far-fetched ones would probably be a harder sale...
Tolkien did have a quote that he wished that his works be filled up with other authors...i think that quote is in slightlytookish's user info...(or in her SoA profile...)

The book is too short! And so are the films. *grins*

They should be both prolonged! PJ should have another LotR project to expand the films. :P
And book elongation should be done by tasteful canon-based fanfic. :)
