I think "Tolkien and the Great War" is probably the best biography of JRRT I've ever read. It really brought it home to me how much like his own heroes he was--and especially in the fact that he himself thought he'd done nothing much.

It also brought it home to me how close we came never to having had LotR or hobbits at all--if it hadn't been for trench fever, he would probably never have survived the Somme!

I think the trench fever was a blessing in disguise..imagine if he did go through the rest of the horrific battles of the Somme! Could he have survived? :/
I liked "TOlkien and the Great War" too...but it took me a while to get through it all~ I just read the epilogue and i really like Garth's analysis of Turin and Beren and Luthien's stories in the whole framework on when Tolkien wrote these stories...
Interesting to read also how each TCBS-ite influenced him... I indeed think that this was a very interesting look on how the war and the deaths of his friends influenced him to write his mythology. Also interesting to note that GB Smith supported him the most (liked his work unbiasedly) while Wiseman had different theological and practical perspectives than Tolkien did.

I'm going to be reading The Frodo Franchise next..it'll be quite different than Great War. :)

I do like what is said here about ordinary people and how they come to do such amazing things because of the danger that they face.
