Yes, i understand-- it's way too sad fro a lot of people.. and it'll be better if there were some way to incorporate a fluffy AU ending. ;)

So you would recommend reading CoH before UT? I have UT and they are yet to be read at the moment.

There is a lot of similarity between Narn in UT and CoH so yes, i think it'll be better to skip the footnoted version and read CoH first. (you'll be "spoiler free" in that case. ;)
