Belated fics fro Slightlytookish

Ok..i went a bit overboard with the writing. :P I guess having 3 nieces/nephews born this year did really contribute to my "expertise" in hobbit babies. :P

I have three mathoms. As ST and grey_wonderer suggested, I wrote about the first time Frodo seeing newborn babies Merry, Pippin and Elanor.

I have a ficlet (movie-verse) a double drabble and one double drabble and a half ...

I hope you will enjoy. :D

At first, Frodo thought nothing about the news that Uncle Saradoc’s first son had been born. He had just come back with his parents from a nice holiday to see his Uncle Bilbo and was happy about the great, wonderful time he had with his most favorite people in the world-his Mum, Da and Uncle Bilbo who had all treated him like a little hobbit princeling, showering him with attention and great food.

So when, Uncle Rory came with the happy news that his new grandson had just been born, ensuring that there would continually be someone to fill the shoes of the Master of Buckland in the future, Frodo’s attention was not affected, and his eyes did not leave the new book he was reading. It was a new one that Uncle Bilbo had gotten him and it was about Elvish and elves and Frodo wanted to finish it for he was so curious about Elves and their different dialects.

Excited chatter from his mum and dad erupted indicating that they were enthusiastically chattering about the new baby.

Big deal. It’s not like there are not a lack of babies around Brandy Hall already, thought Frodo, hearing bits and pieces of the conversation and being quite annoyed that this new baby was getting so much attention.

He went back to reading his book, but then his mum came up to him and smiling, she said, “Frodo! Get ready now! we’re going over to see the new baby. You have another cousin now! His name is Meriadoc and he was born just a few days ago! Now come, come. We must congratulate Uncle Saradoc and Aunt Esmeralda of their first son!”

“Now?”

“Yes now, now hurry!”

“Yes, Mum.”

Reluctantly, Frodo put down his book. Oh yes, he liked babies-when they’re not crying, pooping or doing annoying things like putting their hands into their mouths. But seriously, newborn babies just slept all the time, didn’t they?

They walked the short way to the Brandybucks’ side of Brandy Hall and knocked the door. Drogo had put together some flowers last minute while Primula found an old toy of Frodo’s to give little Meriadoc, in which they had already shortened to Merry.

Who would name their kid, Merry? thought Frodo. That sounds so girly…

Saradoc and Esmeralda were pleased to see the Baggins come. Esmie was still tired from delivering Merry three days ago, but her smile told them that it was all worth it. She and Sara had been waiting for a long time to have this baby and when they finally did, they were happy beyond belief, mindful of everything right that needed to be done to ensure that pregnancy would go well.

Frodo followed his parents into the baby room which was elaborately decorated with wallpaper full of ducks, balloons, rattles, and bottles. Esmie was holding the tiny Merry in his arms, smiling at the guests when they approached her. Sara went up to Primula and Drogo and welcomed and thanked them for coming and for the gifts that they managed to get for their son.

“So let’s see the little baby,” cried Primula. “I’m so happy for you two-you have been waiting a long time for him!”

“Yes, it’s so worth it,” Sara said as he put his arms upon Esmie and smiled at her and the baby.

Frodo peered at the baby, smelling the fresh powdery scent of the newborn. He had brownish gold curls, a small nose, and blue eyes-like him. His eyes were small though and they were not that wide, but Frodo could see why the cuteness would make anyone go “awww” at this newborn.

“Wow-he’s small,” said Frodo, speaking out-loud for the first time. It had seemed the adults had forgotten about him amidst the excitement.

“Awww Frodo! Yes, he is small-he was smaller than usual when he was born but he’s quite healthy! You have a new cousin now, Frodo!” Esmie exclaimed.

“Yep, when you grow up, you can take him places and have fun with him,” Sara added.

“Really? We can tramp along the woods and go fishing, go on adventures, play ball and all these hobbit-lad activities?” asked Frodo excitedly. He hadn’t thought that babies would grow, but yes, they did, and then they could become fun, right?

“Right,” said his Da, putting his arm on him.

Frodo was excited now. He didn’t have any siblings and suddenly desired to hold this little baby too. He is a bit cute--- and his eyes are like mine! Not many hobbit babies have my eye color.

He kept staring at the baby in his Aunt’s arms, afraid to inquire but quite captivated by the newborn’s features. The baby seemed to be staring into space but then his eyes would be closing and it seemed to Frodo that they did not have much energy yet. I wonder when they will actually talk and walk and become more grown up.

Esmie seemed to catch Frodo’s long stare at the baby and asked, “Do you want to hold him, Frodo? You seem so intent.”

Frodo smiled shyly. “I don’t know how to though.”

“It’s all right, I’ll teach you.”

Esmie told him that the most delicate area was the baby’s neck area which did not have strength yet. “It’s important to support the neck with the crook of your left arm and then to have your hand hold their feet--- there,” said Esmie as he transferred little Merry into Frodo’s arms. Frodo was bidden to sit as the adults chuckled at the tween holding the baby.

“Wow, Merry is so light!” exclaimed Frodo, getting used to holding the baby.

“He is just three days old,” Sara said. “You seem like a natural, Frodo. I think you should convince your parents to give you a sibling too!”

“Now, don’t put these ideas into Frodo’s mind,” teased Primula, smiling at the sight of her son holding her newest nephew.

“In time, in due time,” replied Drogo, standing besides Prim and winking and smiling at her.

At that time, Merry’s eyes opened wider as if curious to see who was holding him.

Frodo caught the baby’s new glance and got pretty excited that Merry’s eyes had opened a bit more. “Hey Mum, Dad, Auntie Esmie! Merry’s eyes became bigger!”

The adults crowded over and took a look at little Merry. “Wow yes, he seems to be really enjoying the company,” said Esmie.

“I guess he likes to look at me as much as I like to look at him,” replied Frodo, smiling down at the baby and genuinely enjoying the attention from both the baby and the adults.

“It sure seems so,” replied Sara, laughing.

“Who doesn’t love you?” asked his Mum as she put his arms around Frodo.

Little Merry just yawned at that moment and Frodo could not help but “aww” at the small mouth’s motions in making that shape. “I think it’s getting sleepy now,” he said to Saradoc.

Sara took back his son and put it in his crib. “He should get some sleep for he’ll want milk later on and then it’ll be a good time schedule. He’s had a lot of visitors these past days and I think it’ll be good for him to rest a bit.”

That night, Frodo couldn’t stop thinking about little Merry. He’s seen babies before but none had actually stared at him when he tried to hold them. And he had never wanted to hold a baby, not as long as he did with Merry.

I guess this one is special then… And before Frodo fell asleep, he smiled glad that he had a new cousin to play with …and one that actually seemed to like him.

~fin~

Those wide, green eyes peeked up at me, almost inquisitively, and his smile already lights up the room as I set my eyes upon the first son of Paladin and Eglantine, lying there in his crib with blue, soft blankets wrapped around his small body snugly.

His little fingers gently grasped at me, curious to see this new stranger stare at him in wonder. I affectionately placed my hand upon his brown, light curls and wondered if I had been so small once before.

So this is my littlest cousin, so small yet so smiley!

Seemingly able to sense my thoughts, baby Peregrin gurgled at me, and I was quite amused at his baby sounds. My heart warmed to see such a happy baby. It seemed inexplicable, but there was something about this active, smiley little newborn that made you want to love him already … Tooks just knew how to work their charm at first glance.

“I shall look after you, my dear Took and we shall get to know one other,” I whispered to him. Little Pip just continued to smile and I knew that this young one was going to take a special place in my heart.

“I think she is very beautiful, and is going to be beautifuller still.” ~Sam, RotK

There was just something about sleeping babies that captured Frodo’s heart in the first instance that he beheld the first newborn daughter of Sam. Tears of happiness filled his eyes for seeing the first child of his dearest friend.

Golden yellow curls, fair skin and rosy cheeks framed the innocent face of one of the most beautiful babies Frodo had ever seen. Even in sleep, you knew that she was one adorable, beautiful baby.

“She’s gorgeous, Sam.”

Sam just smiled tears of joy. “I’m flattered, Mr. Frodo; I really am lucky to be gifted with this Elvish beauty, very lucky. Pity not a son as I’m stuck with a name now, but I couldn’t be any luckier to be blessed with such a beautiful daughter… makes a father so proud.”

“Still stuck, Sam?”

“Aye, sir,” replied Sam, cheeks flushed.

Frodo thought for a long moment before replying. He was certainly inspired now since he had seen how the newborn looked like and was keen on thinking of a name for Sam’s daughter. He thought about the beautiful things he had seen in life, the ones that would be appropriate for a hobbit lass. “How about ‘Elanor’, you know the little golden flower in Lothlorien?”

“That’s just about right, sir! That sounds very right indeed,” said Sam excitedly. “I can’t wait to tell Rosie.”

“I hope she likes it,” replied Frodo as his glance went back upon the sleeping hobbit nestled in a bunch of warm blankets, smiling even in dreams.
