So I wrote earlier that I'd be buying a cheap (~€125) telezoom (Tamron 70-300 macro) if I didn't get something that would negate the need for that for my half-birthday. It'd be good for teaching me what direction I should go once I have more money. I'm now reconsidering that. While it would be nice to have a long tele while in Germany (especially up in the Alps), a) our money situation doesn't really allow it, and b) it makes little sense to invest in equipment when three exhibits are coming up, possibly providing some money in return specifically earmarked for photo stuff. So I'll see if I get anything, and if not, I'll bide my time and hope for good sales. If sales are no more than to cover the costs and a bit, then I can look into budget zooms. Given a bit more money, the Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM looks like the best thing under $1000. And better than some things over $1000, too. Given lots more money, something like Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM could make for a very yummy townwalking lens. I doubt I'll invest in something like 18-200, there are two many compromises involved (though nikon seems to have pulled a really good one there). But who knows, exciting new pieces of glass may pop up before I have to make my choice. Right now, I really must focus (pun intended) on getting my exhibit ready, I'm already having too many other things taking up time, and this heat is making me slow.
