I am currently, though only for the moment, residing in the tiny village like town in which I began my life. This little town is home to roughly 200 people and one paved road. Though I have thoroughly been enjoying many aspects of 'the simple life', I reached the conclusion recently that I needed internet access. Too many snail mail letters left unwritten and/or unanswered. Conveniences of modern technology which I had become accustomed to and perhaps dependent upon. Though I am only here on what can be considered an extended vacation I have decided that internet is a necessity.
Ways my life is different here:
The town I live in has no grocery store. The nearest place in which to purchase such things as soy milk or fruit snacks is an hour's drive away through a winding canyon. Due to this I must plan carefully my purchases and make a detailed meal plan prior to my weekly shopping trip. I don't really consider this much of an inconvenience.
Social life is next to non existent, unless you are super active in one of the three churches here. Again, not really an inconvenience as I have enjoyed being much the hermit. I have gotten a great number of creative projects either finished or close to. Not to mention that I have begun to catch up on my reading. I own so many books that I have been plannning on reading and have only just gotten around to. I am thankful for this time.
Studying is also something that I have been able to 'knuckle down' and really get into. The serene quiet of this space and the surrounding mountains are settling forces in my world. It is amazing to sit outside with a cup of tea, reading a book, and see deer come jaunting (do deer jaunt?) through one's street.
So, from all of this, one might think that I was suited to stay in small-town America for an extended period. This is hardly true.
Things that 'trouble' me:
There are many things I have taken for granted of 'big city life', for instance, where does one go to purchase art supplies? Evidently those are at least an hour and a half away.
For proper hair products one has to go even further.
Buying anything for my kids(i.e. shoes, socks, etc.) requires a two hour trip into Boise Idaho....
Vintage shopping and such, that I take great pleasure and joy in, non existent in these here parts....
All-in-all I am getting on well, but I need only do so 'til late January when I will be making my way back to Austin....
