If John Got Kicked Out Of Atlantis…

You don’t have to be a fan of Stargate Atlantis to answer these questions, I'm also interested in hearing about the employment options of men in the United States once they reach a certain age and have certain qualifications.

For those that need some background - I'm talking about a man in his late 30's/early 40's who is the commander of a military base. He is a pilot that has achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Supposing he was kicked out of the Air Force for 'conduct unbecoming' (at least I think that's what the charge would be - I'm awaiting answers from the kind people at military_beta. The specific conduct would be in relation to DADT (Don’t Ask, Don't Tell) and he's been caught having a homosexual affair.

Question 1: If John wished to stay in the Colorado region (i.e. around Cheyenne Mountain) what sort of job could he get? He seems to have an aptitude for mathematics, has taken (but hasn't said if he passed) the Mensa test and must have some sort of postgraduate qualification. Would it be possible for him to get a job in education or would finding a flying job be easier?

Question 2: What if he didn't want to stay in Colorado? What are the reemployment options of a man that age? What jobs couldn't he do?

I think what I'm getting at is - I've read a lot of fics where John leaves the Air Force and flies tourists around, or retires to the beach. Is it that hard for a man in his early 40's to have a career change in the U.S?

Pimp away on this. I'm happy to hear suggestions for all-comers.

flist to the rescue
