“Open it! Open it! Open it!” exclaimed Selena, clapping her hands together and grinning like a six year old at a birthday party as she thrust a red-wrapped box with a green ribbon into Demi’s lap.

Demi laughed at her girlfr - uh - her friend? - uh… we’ll say friend for now - friend’s excitement. She literally and physically could not help it, even if she tried. Seeing Selena happy stirred up a whirlwind of endorphins through her own body, and the other girl’s smile caused a knee-jerk type of reaction that included a beaming smile of her own.

“Okay, you’re officially cut off from sugar for the night, Sel,” Demi laughed before starting to pick at the ribbon on her gift.

“Wait!” Selena exclaimed suddenly, ripping the present from Demi’s hands before reaching into her bag and searching for something.

Demi’s eyes darted back and forth, confused, but once again unable to suppress a smile as Selena frantically prepared her routine Christmas Eve presentation. The first year in their long-running gift exchange tradition was at age eight when Demi decorated a picture frame with candy canes, ribbon, and a picture of them on the set of Barney in the frame. Selena had made Demi a necklace with red, green, and pink beads - the red and green for Christmas and the pink because it was Demi’s favorite color at the time. Just as the gift giving was part of the tradition, so was Selena’s practical incapability to keep her present a secret, always ready to burst at the seams when it finally came time to exchange. This year was no different.

After what seemed like an endless dig through her purse, Selena finally pulled out a small box wrapped in green paper and handed it to Demi.

“I want you to have this one first. The other one’s more of a gag gift,” Selena explained.

Demi exhaled in surprise. “Uh! Two gifts? That’s never been part of the tradition!”

Selena, who was all but bouncing at this point, gave Demi a playful shove. “Oh, come on, traditions change! Now, will you please open your present? I’m dying here!”

Demi laughed as she carefully removed the paper off of the smaller gift box. She removed the lid to reveal a ring; it was a silver band with two thin squiggles, one slanting upward diagonally and the other slanting downward diagonally from the same point in the center of the band. At the end of each squiggle, there was a tiny heart-shaped stone, one red, one black.

As she looked at the ring, Demi’s eyes as softened and misted over, appearing pleased, yet slightly overwhelmed. Selena observed her and wasn’t quite sure what to make of her unexpected expression.

She raised an eyebrow and her face gave way to a half-grin. “Hey, Demi. You okay?”

“Yeah,” Demi said, her eyes meeting Selena’s as the smile returned to her face once more. “It’s just… it, uh, reminds me of the first time we did this. Still giving me killer jewelry!”

Selena’s half-grin transformed into a full-mouthed smile. “So, you like it?”

Demi nodded. “I love it,” she confirmed, reaching for a hug, “Thank you so much.”

Selena held out her hands in front of her. “N - n - no, no hugs until you open your second present!”

Demi’s eyes widened and a toothless grin framed her face as she retracted from Selena’s personal space and reached for the remaining gift. “You’re lucky I put up with you,” she joked, knowing that Selena must be really excited about the 2nd gift since she didn’t even try to hit her with a comeback.

Demi methodically removed the wrapping paper and became increasingly curious as to what kind of “gag gift” could come in a box that looked like it was from a clothing store. When she pulled back the cover of the box and then the tissue paper, she held up a bright green headband with a plastic extension of a branch on top of it.

Demi confusedly examined the present while Selena giggled watching her.

“Can you imagine if I didn’t tell you this was a gag gift?” Selena laughed at her own joke. “Now, put it on!”

Demi, loving how much of a kick Selena was getting out of this, put on the headband as instructed and studied it in the mirror. Only then did she realize what it actually was. “Is this mistletoe?”

Selena nodded from behind her mischievously before reaching into her bag once more and pulling out a matching headband, putting it on her own head and walking back up behind Demi, who could see her approaching in the mirror.

The heat rose to Demi’s cheeks the way flame jumps to a stovetop burner when Selena’s hands found their way to Demi’s hips from behind, her fingers resting on the skin exposed between her pants and the hem of her shirt. Demi slowly turned around to face Selena, because she knew if she didn’t, Selena would manually turn her around. She knew almost everything Selena would do before she did it.

Gone were the eyes and vivacity of a young child and in their place was a dark-eyed, passionate Selena, pinning Demi to the dresser with her own body.

“Well,” she began, thrilled that her scheme looked like it was going to work, “Looks like we’re both under the mistletoe. There’s only one thing left for us to do.”

Before Demi had the chance to be insecure, Selena trapped the exhale that escaped Demi’s mouth between them as she sealed shut the first kiss of the evening.

These random, uncontrollable lip locks were new enough to be exciting and illicit, but they knew each other so well that it felt like kissing someone that knew all of your special turn-ons. Demi was still easily thrilled by the way Selena’s arms locked tightly around her waist and shoulders, and Selena loved the increased pace of Demi’s breathing. But things were too new still to be sure, so Selena waited for Demi to take the initiative to lead her to her bed, which she did, because Selena knew almost everything Demi did before she did it.

The kisses became more frenetic as their lips found new ways to mingle, and Demi pulled back to catch her breath, hooking her fingers in the front pockets of Selena’s jeans to keep her close.

“This feels good,” Demi practically whispered, her eyes cast down and voice shaky.

Selena knew something was up. “Hmm. Well, your voice is saying it, but the rest of you not so much.”

“I’m sorry,” Demi offered sincerely. “It does feel good… more than good. I just wish it wasn’t so hard.”

The mere prospect of a romantic relationship was, to their credit, infinitely more complicated than the average teenage lesbian relationship, which was complicated enough on its own. Being raised in religious families was one thing, but the biggest dilemma existed in constantly being in the public eye, under contract with Disney no less. After the Vanessa Hudgens scandal, any display of qualities that could be perceived as not correlating with their idea of “family values,” their careers, not to mention reputations, would be ruined. Rumor mills, fake boyfriends, and people trying to pit them against one another were just added commodities.

All of this ran through Selena’s head as she sighed in agreement. “I know.”

As if on cue, Demi’s younger sister Madison suddenly burst through the door to Demi’s room unannounced, flinging herself on the bed between the girls.

“Santa’s coming! Santa’s coming!” she shrieked excitedly, resembling Selena’s demeanor from earlier.

Demi’s heart always warmed when she saw the way that Selena interacted with Madison, treating her like she was her own family. She imagined that Selena would make an amazing mom someday.

“But Madi, Santa won’t come if you’re awake! And he knows!” Selena said.

“But I wanted to say good night!” Madison pouted.

“Well, I’m sure Santa will let you take a quick break for a good night hug, reaching to pull Madison into her lap. “I love you, Christmas girl,” Demi said sweetly, hugging her sister.

“I love you, too, but can I ask you a question?” Madison inquired. Demi nodded.

“When you and Selena get married, can we have Christmas at your house?” the young girl asked innocently.

Demi and Selena’s nearly matching sets of brown eyes widened and locked with each other’s. Did she just ask when Demi and Selena got married? To each other?

“What do you mean?” Selena asked cautiously.

“I want us to have Christmas at the house that you two have when you get married. We could have a slumber party and I won’t have to go to bed early!” Madison repeated, as if the idea was the most rational notion in the world.

Demi smiled nervously, feeling a bit light-headed. “Did someone say we were getting married, Madison?” she asked, wondering if she had heard some rumor online.

“Well, you guys love each other forever, right?” Madison asked.

Once again, Demi’s eyes misted over and as she felt Selena’s questioning eyes scanning her, she smiled and said, “Yeah, we’ll love each other forever.”

Selena’s smile couldn’t be rivaled as she pulled Madi onto her lap. “That’s right,” she told her, “But you need to make it through this Christmas first, and you won’t if you don’t get to bed!” Selena joked, tapping her on the bottom and off the bed.

Madison waved good night and scurried out the door and before Selena could say a word, Demi pulled her close and kissed her sweetly.

“And here I thought that as the big sister, I’d be smarter,” she jested.

“Yeah, well I guess sometimes you just need to step back from a situation and see it for what it really is. Not what people make it out to be. I mean, come on, since when have we followed anyone else’s rules? I say we be rebels!” Selena offered cutely, and upon Demi’s eyebrow raise, she clarified. “Well… quiet rebels, but rebels nonetheless.”

Demi’s face broke out in her unforgettable smile, and as Selena reached toward her, she held her hands up much like Selena had done to her earlier. “Uh, no no no… you don’t get to kiss me until I give you your gift!”

Selena laughed, having forgotten all about it. “Ohh, right, that. Well, I better get a kiss afterward!”

Demi stood from the bed and took a small box out of the top drawer of her dresser. “Of course. But here, open this,” she said, extending the box to Selena.

Selena untied the ribbon that clasped the box shut and lifted off the cover, revealing the same silver ring that she had given Demi earlier. Her mouth fell open, and her own misting eyes locked with Demi’s this time.

“No way,” Selena said in disbelief.

“I didn’t want to ruin the surprise when I opened mine, but yeah,” she smiled.

“I can’t believe we bought each other the same ring! You know me so well. I love, it thank you!” Selena beamed, leaning in for the kiss that Demi finally granted her access to.

The kiss that started simply turned into a longer more elaborate kiss as Demi gently lead Selena to rest her back and head on the pillow. She took a break between kisses to offer a suggestion. “How about you call your mom and ask if you can sleep here tonight?”

“A sleep over? That’s never been apart of the Christmas Eve tradition!” Selena teased, imitating Demi.

“Oh come on,” Demi countered back, “Traditions change.”

Selena smiled once again. “Yeah. I guess they do.”
