When I was single, Lord I dressed so fine
Now that I'm married, Lord, I go ragged all the time
Lord, don't I wish I was a single girl again
Wish I was a single girl again (traditional)
This year Valentine's Day coincides with Chinese New Year and the second day of the Winter Olympics (I so wish I could be in
Vancouver!). People often go a little crazy on Valentine's Day, or shortly before, wanting to shower their sweethearts or crushes with love and gifts. Flowers, chocolate, cards, poetry, romantic dinners and all that in the hope of maybe getting lucky with the one they love. But what happens if you're single?
This year February 14th is on a Sunday. So, unless you have other plans, something you could do is gather all your single friends for a brunch. Arrange to meet at your favorite breakfast nook, and go from there. You could decide to attend Chinese New Year's festivities after brunch - if the city you live in has a Chinese community.
If brunch isn't your thing, or if you have prior engagements early in the day, you can always invite your single friends over for dinner. Get them to bring along at least one single friend and a (side)dish or dessert to share. That way you can chill out in the comfort of your own home and meet new friends.
Maybe you just don't feel like spending it amongst friends but rather by yourself. Why not pamper yourself? Buy yourself a gift (it could be a wonderful bouquet of flowers, if that's what you want) or go to a spa, get a massage and spend Valentine's day chillaxing.
If, for whatever reason, you can't afford a day at a spa, I suggest to light some candles, enjoy a bubble bath, crank up your favorite music and dance around the house, hire out some titillating lesbian porn, or a movie of your choice, gorge on your favorite ice cream or open a nice bottle of wine and enjoy a bit of self exploration - if you know what I mean. Unless, you've been chatting up that hot chick you met through a dating site on the internet...
For those of you who are, like me, not romantically inclined (or just against the commercialized romance of Valentine's Day) you could do something you have never done before and always wanted to. Make this day a day of adventure and create some awesome memories. Get that guitar lesson you have been thinking about, or sign up for that pottery class. If you like a little more action than that, you could try surfing or snowboarding (depending on where you live).
Be your own Valentine - it's all about love (who said it should be all about somebody else?). And if you don't want to participate in Valentine's Day you can always sleep through it because the next day all the crazy love hysteria will be over.
