Right after I’d finished
J. Courtney Sullivan’s I thought of writing a review, but then got caught up writing other kinds of stuff. Anyhoo, here’s my opinion on the book - without any spoilers.
The book was recommended to me. When I found out it was one of those “chick lit” books I wasn’t exactly eager to start reading it, to be honest. (Don’t get me wrong: I’m all pro-women.) Again, I got assurance it wasn’t one of those stories in which the main character is addicted to shopping, obsessed with looks and trying to snag that one “perfect” guy. I don’t share those interests, and I find it rather annoying, too.
After a slow start I even enjoyed reading “Commencement”: it tells about four young women (Bree, Celia, April and Sally) who forge a friendship in Smith College. “Commencement” is more in the same vein of “Thelma and Louise” than “Sex & the city”, which perhaps is the reason I like it as much.
I actually like how the author chose to write from four different points of views (one for each girl) and I also like that “Commencement” has a more than decent lesbian storyline - one that some can actually relate to.
