Me and
Uniqlo are not strangers. We've had a couple of fun times before in New York. I'd run around marveling at the zillions of anime inspired t-shirts, cheap selvedge jeans, and helper robots...robots that you know one day will rise up against their masters and kill kill kill. But only after you've spent money on a pastel colored merino wool sweater.
Now I had heard Uniqlo called the Japanese
Gap before, but that's kind of hard to imagine when the store in New York is hyooge, bright, cutting edge, and full of New York fashion snobs and hipsters. Meanwhile the Gap conjures up images of the sweater vest crowd and soccer moms. But, lo and behold, I finally went to Uniqlo yesterday in Gushikawa. And it was in a mall. And it definitely looked like a Gap...if the Gap had nicer things in it and was only frequented by Japanese people.
I picked up a flannel and a cardigan, which I probably shouldn't have because I'm still unemployed. But hey, it was cheap! I've been known to wear almost nothing but t-shirts and hoodies all day everyday when I'm not working, but sadly the brands I normally wear (
Mishka,
Supreme,
Diamond,
Fuct, etc...) cost twice as much here as they do across the ocean. So expect a subtle style shift while I'm over here. Less skater from the hood and more 90s grunge/skate rat and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.
