My day of departure is fast arriving. I've already drank my body weight in beer, went spelunking in an Okinawan cave, eaten all the sushi and taco rice I could shovel into my pie hole, and lunched with three women and a lil' baby. What could be next on the agenda before heading back to the US o A for good? A rock concert. Duh.
My friend and former coworker/student Shintarou invited me out to
Rock In Okinawa on Kokusai Dori to check out his newest band and to see me before I go.
Up above is the first band of the night that I saw. They were...interesting.
Shintarou's old band was called Wolves. They looked like a cross between KISS and The Sex Pistols and played punk. He's since left that band and started a new one with two decidedly not punk girls. While in his previous band he played base, in this new band he plays that, and the drums, and lead guitar, and sings. And he's good in each role, despite only playing non-base instruments and singing for only a year. I wouldn't be surprised if he went off and started the Japanese version of Nine Inch Nails with him playing all the instruments.
The Autumns, the headlining act. They got a fancy pants entrance reminiscent of a WWE Superstar. The lead singer was like a hipster who liked to talk a lot between songs, and the girl on guitar was amazing.
It goes without saying, but I will miss these guys. Thanks for everything.
