One of the side effects of working at a Japanese company that specializes in iPhone and Facebook games has been gaining an influx of Japanese speaking Facebook friends and seeing all their posts clogging up my Facebook feed. Since this company is primarily composed of young womenfolk, most of the posts I see tend to be pictures of deserts, cute shit (followed by an infinite amount of comments proclaiming that the cute shit is indeed cute), purikura shots with friends/boyfriends, and a steady stream of status updates that almost always end with a horrified looking emoticon. However, buried deep, deep, way the hell down in all that is a Japanese internet slang goldmine! I might know more internet Japanese than actual Japanese...not sure what that says about me yet besides that I'm awesome.
www - the Japanese version of LOL. w stands for warau, the Japanese word for to laugh. I was confused when I first saw this one as I thought people were randomly talking about the world wide web...but I was wrong.
mjk - abbreviation for maji desu ka (FO' REAL DAWGY BISCUITS?)
orz - looks like a person bowing, doesn't it? Because it is...I R DISAPPOINT!
GJ - goodo jobu
kawayusu - from kawaii, which everyone and their grandma knows means cute and is not, in fact, one of the lesser known Hawaiian islands.
kwsk - shorthand for kawashiku, meaning with details.
おk - OK! I use this a lot even though it actually takes longer to type (switching from Japanese to English on the keyboard requires 2 extra button presses).
I'm sure there's a ton that I've missed, but there are more than 500 handfuls of internet savvy youngsters and stereotypical otaku around here to stalk and learn from.
As a side note, internet slang doesn't seem to have made the leap from computers to real life as it has in English...thank jebus. Remember, kids! Every time you say LMAO out loud, a baby gets impaled!
