パートタイムの仕事の下げ気味の (The Downside of Part Time Work)

It seems like just 3 months ago I was pseudo singing the praises of working part time. Little did I know...Now that I've actually worked part time for almost three months now I can finally shed some light on all the things that are crappy about it.

  • It's not necessarily steady. Case in point: I started off my part time career with a whopping 2 hours. By mid June I was working 97 hours a week. Now, in July, I'm down to 35.
  • You don't get paid if your classes get cancelled. This has happened a few times, like when the typhoon came and when one of my students repeatedly wasn't showing up.
  • Multiple part time jobs also can require a lot of driving to many places in a day. At the height of my working time I'd have to drive to Camp Foster, then Camp Hansen, then near the Convention Center in Ginowan, then up to Futenma before going home. There would be breaks in between those classes but I'd take staying in one place over driving to a million places any day.
  • I can't really develop relationships with my co-workers as I tend to only be in one place an hour or two. I dunno...I spend most of my time at work so relating with other teachers is mad important to me.
  • All of the places I work at pay at different times during the month. Always nice to get all your money at the same time so you can handle your bills accordingly.
  • And, of course, having to look for more part time work to support your lavish lifestyle kinda blows
It's already the fourth of July. That means I've got to find new work ASAP or kiss Okinawa goodbye. I wonder which will happen first.
