Hidden in Nanjo City down the street from Chinen Junior High School is Kurukuma Cafe, a small place serving up the best Thai food in all of Okinawa. The menu mainly features a zillion variations of curry, but there's also a bunch of old Thai standbys like Pad Thai and Spicy Soup. It even gets the Ron Seal of Approval where price is concerned. I'm a notorious cheapskate, but I didn't find anything to be shockingly expensive or even regularly expensive. Pretty sure you can get some bomb ass curry for under 1000 yen. That's what I like to call a delicious value.
MaryAnn and Mom opted for the chicken curry. The curry at Kurukuma doesn't taste anything like the curry anywhere else I've been too, which is a good thing. Too many curry places wind up serving exactly the same thing, and the only difference might be whats in the curry or the spiciness. Here, though, the curry has a sweetness to it that makes it better than the rest and worth the drive down south.
Just outside of the cafe is a small museum you have to work your way through before getting to Kurukuma proper. It's like something ripped out of Ripley's Believe It Or Not. There's your dead, stuffed, kissing dear, Japanese warrior statues, a giant gong, pictures of nature, and a dinosaur skeleton replica among other things.
The best part of Kurukuma, besides the wonderful food, is that you get to eat it while enjoying an awesome view of the ocean. The wait took to get seated took a hundred times longer than the wait to get food, but who can complain when you get to stare at the crystal clear waters surrounding Okinawa.
