A Flicker of Fate

“I can’t believe this is really happening…”

Eiji’s usual cheerful voice was clouded. There was a slight panic shimmering through. And his eyes looked pleadingly at his friends and team mates.

“I… I don’t know what happened…”

There came no reaction on Inui’s statement. All players were looking wide eyed at each other and the book lying in their midst. Had they not been so shocked, they would have yelled at him. They would have hit him. They would have dragged him to the kitchen to make one of his juices. However at the current time, no one moved… They couldn’t move…
-

A roar above them. Gunshots next to them. There was no way they could hide. No way to defend themselves. There was no way to survive.

A helpless look was cast aside. A quick flinch when the sound of the explosion sounded just a little bit to near.

In the distance they could have sworn to have heard the cry of one of their friends. But the sound was so soft against the thundering canons around them, that it was quickly moved to the place in their minds that was called imagination.

They stood there for what seemed to be hours before the terrible noise around them finally died. Every now and then a soft moan would rise; a sigh and soft thud would indicate a tired, broken body falling down. And when that happened they would squeeze the hand they were holding. Just to make sure that they were alive. Just to make sure they were awake. Just to make sure the other one would still be there at the other one’s side.

They had heard a lot of strange sounds in the couple of minutes they were here. A deep roar. A high, shrill shriek. The rush of wind that was moved by something enormous. They had not looked up. They hadn’t dared to look up.

They had heard sounds they never thought to hear in real life. Gunshots. The clashing of sabres. The thunder of canons. The screams of dying people.

They smelled the blood and the gunpowder. They tasted death, pain and war.

“Hey, what are you guys still doing there? Who are you?”

The voice seemed to come out of nowhere. Yet it was soft and the tone had a reassuring and calming effect on the two boys.

A huge shadow fell over them and when finally they looked up, their eyes widened even more than when they arrived. They couldn’t believe what they saw. No one in their position could.

They took a couple of steps back when the rider landed on the ground before them. Because it needed space. At least that is what they were trying to convince themselves. Truth was, they were afraid. They were terrified by the huge red body. The sharp little horns, some not quite so little. The huge tail. Its head was as big as the entire length of the boys. If not bigger.

“Who are you?”

Again that question. This time accompanied by a strange look in the stranger’s eyes.

“Can’t you see it Master?”

The new voice was loud, like thunder. Yet it held respect and love. His words betrayed his admiration and determination. It was as if seeing them gave him new strength.

Surprised the man looked from the two boys in front of him, to the Dragon he had just descended from.

“It’s them. They have returned...”

His load roar echoed over the battlefield. It reached the mountains around them, and crosses them. It was as if it was waiting for an answer. As if it was promising better days to come. As if an old prophecy had finally come true...
-

“So... If I understand it correctly... Because of that juice they were transported to there...?”

Oishi’s finger trembled when he pointed directly at the book that was still lying in the middle of the group.

Silence fell again when all tried to grasp that knowledge. They could hardly imagine it. Two of their friends, two of their team mates had suddenly disappeared in a flash of red and black. The same red and black the cover of the book was glowing with.

“Would that mean...?”

Hesitantly the acrobat reached out for the book. Trembling fingers picked it up and held it as if it was the most precious thing on earth. Slowly he opened it at a random page. Quickly his eyes read through the words. And a disappointed look covered his face when he didn’t find what he was looking for.

“What were you looking for?”

Oishi’s voice was soft and it made his boyfriend turn towards him.

“I thought… Perhaps they were... Perhaps we could… Silly thoughts…”

He lowered his gaze again. Not wanting to see the possible mocking gazes of his teammates.

“To follow where they are through the book?”

Silence fell after Kawamura’s question, and Eiji nodded sadly.

“I was thinking the same…”

-

“We have returned? What are you talking about…?”

The Dragon nodded in understanding. And he gave his Master a quick, warning look not to interfere.

“Of course you don’t remember Fuji-sempai… And you neither Tezuka-sempai… But you do indeed return… Always do you return when most in need we are. And never do you remember when you arrive. But always you help us survive…”

The magnificent creature suddenly hissed loudly when he noticed his Captain, his Rider roll his eyes.

“You are too young. You do not remember. But you forgot that we Dragons live many times the lives of men. You forgot that we remember what everyone should know, through the ages past…”

Shocked the man took a step back. Not used that his own Dragon criticized him.

With a dignified huff the Dragon turned his head back to the two strangers.

“I know that what I have just said appears strange and illogic to you both. But I assure you that it is the plain truth… I know what you are thinking. I am way older than any of you here present. So how can I know both of you from many years back…? Because that is your question, isn’t it?”

Hesitantly they nodded. It didn’t make sense at all.

“Allow me to explain that later. First of all, would you kindly step on my back, because our enemies are arriving from behind that hill, and I wouldn’t want all of us here to die… Not now when our saviors have finally arrived…”

Within the blink of an eye, the other man had already mounted the huge creature.

“Pardon me sempais…”

And before they knew it, the gigantic claw of the Dragon had already picked both of them off the ground. There was no sound that left their lips. Not even when the front paws closed around them and the gigantic wings took them all up in the air…

Fuji felt Tezuka’s fingers close over his own. A strong grip. It was the only sign that he was feeling nervous. The tensai simply squeezed his hand in return. They couldn’t talk. The rush of the wind would overpower everything…

Before long however they suddenly felt the Dragon descending. They had arrived…

-

“You might better get thinking about how we are going to get them back… They are there, wherever there might be, for over 3 hours already.”

Every face was turned towards the Data Master. Hope was the most present emotion, though behind it there was anger and sadness as well.

“I… I don’t know how to get them back…”

“But, they drank your azu. Surely you must be able to find a way to bring them back…? Not?”

Sadly Inui shook his head when hearing Echizen’s reasoning.

“True, they drank the azu. But you all did so before. I am very sure that they didn’t disappear because of drinking that… I honestly don’t have a clue how they went away, and even less how to bring them back…”

The disappointment was huge with everybody. And even though they tried, neither of them could get any sleep that night.

-

“Fuji-sempai… Tezuka-sempai…”

The whispers of the Dragons were so soft that the entire place could hear them. Because no matter how hard they try, for humans a whisper of them is like a normal conversation.

In unison all Dragons present slightly bowed when both boys descended the claws of the one that brought them there.

“Allow me to finally introduce myself. My name is Novitskaya I am… Sorry, I was your grandfather’s Dragon, Fuji-sempai. And that one over there…”

He nodded his head towards a back and silver Dragon. She slowly and elegantly came closer.

“My name is Ivanova I am a king’s dragon. While Novitskaya over here is a heaven’s dragon.”

She turned and nodded towards the other groups of Dragons who were all standing around them.

“Over there are the bronze ones. Next to them are blue Wings. And there are the white stars.”

Some of the Dragon Riders had come near during the small talk. Some of the older ones bowed respectfully like the Dragons had done. The youngsters just curiously watched the two newcomers.

“I don’t have a Rider. My Master died during a battle a small month ago.”

Slowly she lowered her head and softly nudged Tezuka’s shoulder.

Her meaning was clear to everybody present.

"I've known your father. as well as your grandfather. It would be my honour..."

Every eyes of every Dragon was fixed on Tezuka. All were curious to hear his answer. While some of the younger Riders were seemingly not too happy with the sudden, improvised changing of the required protocol.

Not really knowing what to do, what to say, or what was required of him, Tezuka stole a quick glance towards the friend that was, as usual, standing next to him. Blue eyes were still closed, and a genuine smile was on his lips. There was no one but Tezuka who saw the small nod of Fuji’s head.

And it really was all that the Captain himself could do. The Dragons roared loudly when they saw the human’s answer. And Ivanova smiled gently at her new Rider.

The room they had been given was big enough to let all the Regulars in, and even then there would be space enough for more.

Their two beds were on opposite sides of the room. There was a large table standing in the middle of the chamber, big enough for twenty men to eat on. Some couches, they looked really comfortable, were placed all over the place. Two of the walls were like major mirrors. The tapestry under their feet was soft and cosy. And their closets seemed big enough to be a room themselves.

“So… What do you make of this, Tezuka?”

The Captain’s silence was enough answer to the Tensai.

“Aa, exactly what I thought… So, we can only get back if we survive and win this war, ne…?”

There honestly wasn’t anything more to say. They didn’t know what happened. They didn’t know anything. But they did know that they could believe every word of what that Dragon, Novitskaya, had told them.

So, seemingly, both their fathers and grandfathers had come here. And who knows how many other generations before. They had come, they had fought, and they had won… And now, it was their turn. And they know that they would not let them down. Not one. Not their previous generations. Not the Dragons and the people here who needed help. Not their friends who were waiting for their return. Not themselves…

“Let’s get some sleep. We’re going to need it…”

Fuji nodded. He knew Tezuka was right.

“Saa… If we make it back home… I think I’ll finally understand my father and grandfather a bit better… Though I’m still gonna hit them for never telling me…”
And even though their situation wasn’t what you could call comfortable, both of them fell asleep, a slight smile on their lips.
~ * ~ * ~

The next morning everybody was waiting for them. The main court was so crowded, as if it was the final of Wimbledon or Roland Garros.

“We have to go. All Dragons and their Riders have to be up in the air. The big battle is coming closer…”

It was Kremena who spoke up. Novitskaya’s Rider.

“We took the liberty of assembling a crew for you Tezuka-sempai. I hope you don’t mind.”

There was an edge of sarcasm to his words that, had it been one of his team, Tezuka would have made him run laps for. For now though, he only nodded his thanks.

Four boys were standing before him. They honestly couldn’t have been older than fourteen, though everyone could see they were well trained and they knew there job.

“I’m very sorry, but there is no place for Fuji-sempai…”

Again it was Kremena who spoke.

And while Novitsakya growled softly and warningly, Tezuka and Fuji changed a look of understanding that was only seen by Ivanova who nodded approvingly.

“That’s okay.”

The words had barely left his lips and everybody present fell silent. Not the least affected by the sudden attention, the Tennis Captain continued.

“Fuji and I talked it over last night. I will fight by your side in the air, with Ivanova. While Fuji will stay on the ground. Taking care of the wounded, planning the attack and defence tactics. Train the youngsters. And, should it prove necessary…”

His voice faltered for a second and he shot a worried look aside. They had talked about it indeed, and truth to be told, he didn’t like the outcome.

“… spy and gather information of the other front.”

There was no time for the other Riders or Dragons to say anything to that. For in the distance they could see the enemies own Dragon’s colour the sky.

Though every single one present was wondering the exact same thing. Training the youngsters? How could he? They were not from here. It could be seen in their eyes. They knew nothing of battles. They couldn’t even fight…

//”I can do it Tezuka. I know I can.”//

His usual smile was still on his face, though for once, his eyes were open. They were looking serious at his Buchou.

“Don’t argue… I know what you want to say. I’ve never fought. The only things of fighting I know are the few books I’ve read about war, and the movies I’ve seen with Yuuta and friends. But I know I can. Don’t ask me how, but I can learn them to become better in fighting than they already are. I can plan the tactics. You must feel it too. Ever since we came here. Don’t you feel like something changed inside. As if you’ve been prepared for this fighting, for this war, your entire life?”

Silence fell once more, and both of them knew that actually there were no words needed. “They will not allow me to fly with you as well… You know they won’t. You saw it on their faces as well as I did. When Ivanova chose you above anyone else. You saw…”//

Within seconds the first ones were up in the air already. Tezuka’s own crew had already taken position on Ivanova’s harness, and they were impatiently waiting for himself to board.

“Go, they need you up there…”

The Tensai’s voice was firm and held no trace of fear. The other one nodded once before he turned and walked away. A firm, proud step. Before he got halfway though, a gentle pressure on his arm made him stop and turn again. he looked straight in the open eyes of his best friend. For the very first time Tezuka saw fear in those blue orbs. True, pure fear.

“Be careful Tezuka. Return savely.”

The smallest of reassuring smiles graced his lips before he put his hand on the shoulder of the man in front of him.

“You know I will.”

He said no more. Though his eyes spoke all his voice couldn’t.

‘I will never leave you behind.’

~ * ~ * ~

A soft sigh escaped the Tensai’s lips when he found himself alone in the huge library that the fort offered. Pen and paper was lying on a table in the middle of the room. Waiting to be used by him.

There was no smile on his face when he sat down. He already knew, had already known before they left up in the air, that he would spent every second worrying about him. He had been able to convince his friend that he could fight and that he could help the kids train. So, logically, if he could do that here, it would mean that Tezuka could also fight. But still… He couldn’t get the thought out of his head that his Captain was on his way to a battle. Perhaps he was fighting already. He couldn’t focus on the tasks he was supposed to be doing. The fear for his friend was overwhelming. He didn’t think he could take it should Tezuka come back seriously wounded. Or worse. Should he not come back at all…

“Fuji-sempai…”

The soft, nervous voice was enough for his usual smile to return. His head shot up and before him he saw a little kid. Must be somewhere around eight or nine years old. The gentle face of the Tensai seemed, as usual, to be enough for the boy to relax.

“Is it true that you are going to train us?”

His eyes were wide open and there was a glitter of hope in them that surprised Fuji. The tennis player honestly didn’t know what to make of it. Strange, he used to be the best when it came to reading people. He often considered people like books. Honestly, there wasn’t that much difference between a human creature and a good book. There were things so obvious that everybody could see them. And then there were the things were you had to read between the lines before you could discover them. And this time, not even the Tensai could find the meaning behind the hopeful glance in the boy’s eyes.

“My grandmother used to tell me tales of the old times, as a bedtime story. My parents didn’t know about it. She believes the prophecy, because she has survived one before. She believes in you and Tezuka-sempai. Just like the Dragons. Just like her entire generation. Our parents, all grown-ups, do not believe that you two are send over here to end this war. But like my grandmother, I know that you will help us. The Dragons believe in you. The Dragons trust you with their lives. I don’t see what more prove the others need…”

The boy had looked down the entire time while he explained. He had avoided Fuji’s eyes and he had failed to hide the blush on his face. However, after minutes of silence, he looked up, only to find a true smile on the tennis player’s lips.

“Thank you…?”

Smiling shyly the boy answered the unspoken question.

“Ilias. My name is Ilias.”

Nodding Fuji stood up, gently placing a hand on a small shoulder.

“Let’s go find the others and think of some ways to help our friends up there in the air…”

The boy quickly ran through the library, passed the door and the two guards. Every now and then slowing down, just to check if the Tensai was still following. Pleased by the youth’s eagerness, Fuji decided to run as well, instead of just calmly walking behind Ilias, as he normally or in any other situation but this would have done.

Once outside the blond-haired youngster enthusiastically called out to all his friends. Urging them to gather up and listen. Urging them to help and ignore their parents’ orders, because, honestly, what boy their age obeyed everything? Weren’t rules to be broken?

The blue-eyed tennis player smiled upon hearing the boy’s words. Somewhere in the back of his mind a memory called out to him. He once told Tezuka the exact same thing. As well as Yuuta, and Eiji… For a moment the thoughts of his friends and brother clouded his heart. He took a deep breath. This war first. Survive this. Then go home.

~ * ~ * ~

An hour later Dragons emerged from the blue, cloudless sky. They landed on the grass fields just outside the fortress. And every Rider wondered why there was no single boy of their ground crews who came rushing out to help them. All bathed in sweat and most were wounded, though none of the wounds were life-threatening. There was nothing that couldn’t be fixed by a couple of bandages, some medicine and decent rest. Though rest was something none of them could afford.

Battle sounds were heard when they neared the gate. Worry was clearly visible on every face and all rushed inside. All but Tezuka. He had let Ivanova land as very last, just to be able to make a round over the castle. And he had smiled when he had seen what was happening on the main court.

“Let your arm complete that swing. Watch out for your other side. Trust all your senses. Don’t block out your feelings. Don’t focus on one thing, keep an eye on everything. Don’t lose your balance. And don’t let anger ever influence the way you fight.”

Fuji’s voice was soft when he was giving orders, yet even through all the noise the fighting youngsters were making, every ear catch every word.

“And don’t ever let your guard down.”

Crystal blue eyes locked with Tezuka’s brown ones and they both smiled gently. And relieved.

Turning his attention back to the kids, he was amazed at the strong concentration on every young face.

“Alright, that’s it for now…”

The words had barely left his lips or every face turned towards him. Surprised. Questioning. Disappointed. Tired.

“Our fighters have returned.”

He didn’t need to say more. In seconds everybody started running and shouted. The messy discipline after a battle. Ground crews rushing towards the Dragons. Quickly Fuji walked over to his friend. His eyes questioning him, even though he didn’t see any severe wounds.

“I’m alright.”

They walked to their room in a perfect silence. They needed no words. And when Tezuka stumbled, partly from pain, partly of fatigue, Fuji caught him. Gently he draped his friend’s arm around his shoulders, while his other arm held Tezuka’s waist. Together they walked the last steps to the room.

Slowly the Tensai lowered his Buchou onto the bed.

“Let me take care of those…”

He didn’t wait for an answer, but started to unbutton Tezuka’s shirt the moment he sat down.

Briefly he gazed at his friend when there came no protesting words, nor a firm hand that stopped his movements. The Tensai halted his actions for a mere second when he saw the Captain had his eyes closed. Head thrown backwards. A pained expression on his face.

Had Tezuka looked up, he would have seen his friend with the saddest look ever, while he was gently, silently treating every wound on the well trained body.

It only took Tezuka five minutes after that to fall in a deep slumber. Never noticing that Fuji held watch at his bedside, his blue eyes open and not once leaving the now peaceful face in front of him.

~ * ~ * ~

“If nothing happens, they will kill us all the next attack. They’ve seen our strength, they’ve observed our weak points. We are way outnumbered.”

Every one, even the Dragons, knew Kremena was right. They knew the enemy was way bigger in forces.

“Not if we try fighting another way…”

A couple of boys walked up to the front where Novitskaya’s Rider was standing.

“We made it up while you were in the air.”

Proudly Ilias showed a couple of paper rolls.

“We know we are but kids. And we know you don’t really trust the two strangers who mysteriously appeared, but please, just look at this. Our fighting has improved, you saw so yourself yesterday. Perhaps these ideas might just work.”

They looked hopefully at the crowd before them. And Ilias jumped a little when Kremena took the papers from his hands. Rolling them open, he looked at it with the gaze of one who doesn’t believe. Though his eyes widened and a shocked expression covered his face when he saw those new battle formations.

“This … This might actually work…”

His voice was a mere whisper, but through the intense silence, everybody had heard it. The kids cheered and the Riders walked up to their friend. Immediately they started planning. Hope had filled their hearts again…

~ * ~ * ~

“Tezuka… This is it… They are ready. Both sides fully prepared…”

Hesitantly he lightly placed his hand on his friend’s arm.

“Return with a victory.”

The tensai’s smile was in place, though it was easy to see that it was forced.

“You know I will…”

Taking a deep breath to calm himself he let go of Tezuka’s arm.

“Then go…”

He had expected his buchou to do just that. However, he was surprised when he saw Tezuka turned to face him completely.

“I know what you think. I know what you’re hiding for everyone but the kids you trained.”

Silence fell and blue eyes opened slightly. Daring him to stop him and abandon those young ones.

“Please, when they attack, and you fight, please be careful… And bring victory, you as well…”

A more honest smile graced Fuji’s lips when he nodded.

“You know I will…”

With a last nod the captain turned and walked away, closing the door behind him. A shiver made the tennis genius wrap his arms around himself.

“Return safely, Kunimitsu…”

It was whispered so softly that had he not been listening to his own words, even he wouldn’t have heard it.

And unbeknownst by him, his friend just outside the room left a silent plea as well.

“Stay safe, Syusuke…”

~ * ~ * ~

For five minutes the Dragons colored the sky above the fortress, before even they disappeared out of sight. And it was only ten minutes later that Fuji left his place by the window and ran downstairs. As requested the youngsters were waiting on the main court. Lined up. Swords and bows and arrows ready.

Yes, there would be a ground battle as well. And he would make sure everybody survived.

~ * ~ * ~

“We did it!”

The shouts rose up in the air, accompanied by the roars of the Dragons.

It had been a very long and fierce battle. Red was the color mostly seen everywhere. Some Dragons only had half of their fighting crew. Some had a couple of members of a fallen Dragon on their backs.

‘I’m coming… We’ll go home again… We won!’

There was a rare open smile on Tezuka’s face when Ivanova flew him back to the castle. A smile that would disappear as soon as he saw that slaughter on the main court. There was no way any Dragon, not even the smallest one, could land there.

Soon the fields were crowded and kids ran outside to take care of the wounded. Some with bandages of their own. But all smiling when they realized victory was theirs.

Not caring about the old wounds that had reopened, nor about the new ones, Tezuka rushed inside, looking around frantically to catch a glimpse of familiar chestnut hair, blue eyes or the everlasting smile.

“Tezuka-sempai…”

Swirling around he immediately recognized the boy. Ilias. Fuji had told him everything about the kid.

“Fuji-sempai…”

His tone was enough to freeze the captain’s heart. The little color that was still on his face drained at once.

“… He’s in your room…”

Sadly the boy bowed his head. Not able to keep the older boy’s intent and frightened gaze.

Seeing how distressed the blond haired boy was, Tezuka took a moment to place a reassuring hand on Ilias’ shoulder and force a comforting smile on his lips when the boy met his eyes again, before quickly running up the stairs. He raced through the corridors and banged their door open.

Fuji was lying on his bed. His face as pale as the sheets, as pale as death. A bandage crossed his chest, covered his belly and ran over his left arm. Bloodstains became clearly visible through it.

Setting himself down next to his friend, he gently took hold of an unmoving hand, squeezing it carefully.

Blue eyes fluttered open and the ghost of a smile covered his lips when he saw a non-mortally wounded Tezuka.

“You are safe…”

It was a hoarse whisper and the tennis buchou knew it took a lot of effort and caused a lot of pain for Fuji to speak up.

“Hush. You must rest. Don’t push yourself.”

Yet instead of listening, the tensai started speaking again.

“I’m glad you are safe. I’m sorry you had to find me like this when you returned. No, don’t say anything. Just, let me tell you…”

Tezuka opened and closed his mouth. Knowing he should make him stop talking. Yet at the same time knowing that he would never be able to… So instead he nodded. Allowing his friend to continue.

“So much blood. So much death… I couldn’t let it happen to Ilias…”

And then Tezuka understood why the kid had refused to met his gaze at one point.

“He reminds me too much of Yuuta… When I saw the sword coming down… I couldn’t…couldn’t let Yuuta die…”

The words were coming out raged and even more hoarse than some minutes ago.

“Hush… Please…”

Slowly Fuji brought a hand up. A surprised and mildly amused look on his face.

“Tears? You…?”

Gently his fingers brushed them away. His hand for a mere second resting against Tezuka’s cheek, before his arm fell down on the bed. Eyes closed and breathing labored.

“No! Fuji. Don’t die… Don’t go there where I will lose you. We would return together. We promised. Don’t leave to where none of us can follow…”

His hand was now desperately clutching the one of the tensai.

A bright blue light suddenly surrounded Fuji.

“No! Syusuke!”

There was a flash and in the distance a Dragon roared.

~ * ~ * ~

“Inui… We have to get them back. They are in that book since yesterday afternoon.”

The entire team was sitting at the table, but none could touch the breakfast before them.

“Scrambled eggs… I’d like those. How about you?”

Surprised looks were cast aside. For a couple of seconds none of them could move. What happened after that was a mess of flying chairs when all of them jumped up and sprinted out of the kitchen.

“Fine…”

Tezuka’s answer drifted towards the seven boys waiting downstairs. Shocked they watched their buchou and the tensai calmly walk down the stairs towards them.

“Why are you looking like that? Come one, I’m starving…”

Before the two of them could get one step in the kitchen however, they found themselves hugged by their teammates. Over the heads of their friends they shared a knowing look and they smiled.

“Let us eat something first, and then we’ll tell you everything.”

And as a soft murmur Fuji added:

“Not that you’d believe it, but…”

So when they were all comfortable seated, half an hour later, the tensai started their story. And while their teammates were so transfixed on the tale, no one noticed Fuji’s and Tezuka’s linked fingers.
