I love the naturalist
David Douglas very much for his own sake, but this quote from a letter written about him, and the image it produces, has always especially delighted me, because it's just So Stephen.
"One morning a large specimen was brought into our square, and we all had a hearty laugh at the eagerness with which the Botanist pounced upon it. In a very short time he had it almost in his embraces fathoming its stretch of wings, and he found it a full nine feet from tip to tip."
Fortunately...
"This satisfied him, and the bird was carefully transferred to his studio for the purpose of being stuffed."
I think they would have had a lot in common!
