Advent Post Day 13

Dec 12, 2012 20:43

I am posting this early because I am afeared that tomorrow may to be too busy to post. And, to tell the truth, I love it when a post is early.

TITLE: Christmas Morn
AUTHOR: Ashley-Pitt
WORD COUNT: 400
RATING: PG
PROMPT: Submitted for Advent Calendar day 13
SUMMARY: Stephen and Jack meet on deck one early morning.
DISCLAIMER: I do not own these characters, nor am I making any money from them. I borrow them once in awhile, but put them away tidily.

It was early in the morning, and Stephen was tired of not sleeping. He got him self out of bed and pulled on his breeches and shirt. He walked out of his small room into the larger cabin that he shared with Jack.
Mighty snores emanated from Jack’s bunk. Stephen smiled grimly. He envied Jack’s ability to fall asleep anywhere and almost instantly.
Stephen grabbed his heavy coat and moved to the steps. He came up on the quiet deck. The artic cold stung his nostrils as he inhaled. His breath came out in steamy puffs.
He went aft and placed his hands on the rail. He gazed out at the ocean.
There was no moon but the many stars made a crystalline canopy over his head.

Venus, morning star twinkled brightly in the still dark eastern sky.

Stephen felt a bulking presence join him near the rail and he knew without looking that it was Jack.

“Do you think that is the star the Moorish kings followed to the manger?’

“Perhaps. But I rather hold to the theory that it was some sort of comet that they followed.”
“That would signify.” Jack said. He inhaled deeply. “We will have snow before the afternoon watch is called. The air smells of wet and the glass is dropping.”

“Do you think that we will engage the enemy this day?” Stephen asked.
Jack shook his head and replied, “Not on this day, but perhaps on the morrow.”

“Good.” Stephen said. “Although it is only forestalling the inevitable, it does not seem quite Christian to fight a battle on the day of our Lord’s birth.”

They were silent for a few moments before |Jack said. “Stephen, would you join me for Christmas dinner? I asked that cove Killick to bring up two bottles of my good wine and he grudgingly said that he might even be able to serve us a very small plum pudding.”

Stephen pressed closer to Jack and said. “I would like that above all things.”

Jack gently laid his large calloused hand on Stephen’s smaller one and said. “Perhaps we shall have time to play the new piece.”

Stephen sighed softly, “Happy Christmas, my dear.”

“Happy Christmas, Stephen.”

Bonden stood at the wheel listening to the soft but still quite audible exchange between the two men he held quite dear.

He smiled and murmured, “And Happy Christmas to us all”
