Day 9 - extra

Dec 09, 2009 14:12

An extra Stephen drabble, because it would look lonely if I posted it all alone.
It's even 10% extra free, as I can't get it under 110 words.

No warnings; read it however you like :)
Inspired by a throwaway line in The Surgeon's Mate which has struck me whenever I've read it.

9th December - On names )

fanfiction, author/artist: y, drabble, rating: g, christmas calendar

I was thinking more existential who-am-I than drug-addled, but both apply :)

I'm glad you found the warmth. I think as long as Stephen can be sure of Jack, he'll be ok, even if he's sure of nothing else ;)

Poor Stephen! I was, after all, what is called a nameless child..

And that will never stop hurting. *hugs him*

I suppose because it's one of the things other people can hurt him with, and (as I think he says at some point) he can't hit back.
And he really doesn't like being vulnerable.

This might be short but it definitely packs a punch.

Ooh this gave me the shivers!

That line always struck me too, and makes me wonder whether he gives his name as Stephen because that's who he is to Jack. What's in a name?

I have a little note scribbled in the margin saying 'which name?!' :)

It must be partly a language thing - he's mostly operating in English, so that's the name he uses most.
But it does seem to be his default name for himself, which is interesting, as I'm not sure English is his default language. So yes, maybe.
