Ah, I recognise this. Oh, I cannot bear it. I don't care if it's bittersweet and uplifting in the most melancholy way and if it's positive angst and beautifully written - it just makes me too sad. I reread it, of course, but I feel physical pain at the thought of Stephen without Jack.

*hugs* I'm sorry. :( The only consolation I can offer is that he is not long without Jack, and he has a loving family with him all the time that Jack is not.

I- *gasp* know- *sob*

It's a beautiful piece of writing, but in my canon Stephen just has to die first. He's been abandoned and left alone too many times.

I've been working one where Stephen goes first, just to balance things out. It's just that this one got completed first, and fitted the prompt elsewhere.

I love this piece because though he may have gone first, Jack will patiently wait for Stephen wherever and whenever that is.

Killick had chosen not to stay at Woolcombe
So true. Thanks you for thinkiing of this in your story as I have always been certain that Killick would not leave whoever was to survive of our duo. And if he had to come back as a ghost...

*shuffles* Oh yes, I am certain he would. *kicks WIP folder under the sofa*

Killick is so immensely difficult to be rid of that I don't think he would let a little thing like death get in the way of his duties. ;)

*gets on creaking knees and looks under sofa*

We would all like a Killick now and then!

The Ash Grove is one of my favorite songs and I had the melody running through my head the entire time I read this. Very sad, and yet very peaceful. I enjoyed the story a great deal. :)
