A few days ago, my paper ran a heart-wrenching column. Teens at a local shelter wrote about how they ended up there and want they wanted for Christmas. One teen needed clothes for her baby and she asked for shoes so she could do a nursing internship. Many of the teens wrote about how they had never had a real Christmas or ever belonged at home.

The letters were simple but elegant and just heart-breaking.

I don't cry at work, but after reading it I had to go take a break and pull myself together.

Now, just a few days later, we're getting ready to run another story.

Since that story ran, the shelter has received $50,000 in cash, $15,000 in gift cards and many gifts.

Right now is a hard time to be in newspapers. We just had buyouts. We're not filling empty positions. We're all working hard.

Also, we have to read a lot about the horrible parts of society. Crime and greed and evil often make news.

This time, though, it was something so much better.

It's heartening to be reminded newspapers have a place in the community, and that we can help something really wonderful happen.
