We shall never cross the sea again

Mmm, beer.

I had always accepted the legend that the brewer George Hodgson invented India Pale Ale (IPA) so as to survive the lengthy sea voyage to India, and thus conquered the region no English ale had previously managed. In fact, this is heinously untrue, as I found out today via random surfing, and I thus consider myself duly chastened. It transpires that the reason the East India Co. chose Hodgson's beer to transport to India was largely due to his being the closest brewery to where their ships were moored in London, and that the improving of the IPA in casks during the two months' voyage was a (happy) coincidence. I also now understand that many beers that are called IPA now (including Greene King's variety) are scarcely IPAs in the traditional sense at all, but just your usual brown ale or bitter. Still, generally, pretty tasty though.

I've also found out, via an advert that came up on some webpage, that Foster's make a 'premium ale' in cans. Never seen this. Anyone tried it? Is it as ghastly as I suspect it to be?
